Re: Schlock Mercenary III: One million years of crowdsourced kitten videos
Schlock is VERY popular and I am sure that there are many people that would help with terminology and proper military organization. "Adjutant" I think has been around a while though.

Re: Schlock Mercenary III: One million years of crowdsourced kitten videos
Yhea, but you have to admit there has been quite a surge of military-lingo terms recently.

I think this is is directly related to the appearances of Murtaugh, Bristlecone, and possibly Papa Tagon, who are all much more traditional military-minded characters than the usual viewpoint/focus characters we deal with in the Toughs- most of the time we're watching characters who are more at home with the Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries than official rules and regulations. The Toughs are armed, but they're largely not *military*, and I'm not surprised to see more military-type jargon show up when they start dealing with more characters who are.

Don't let the grunts hear you say that. Hurts their feelings.

Aha, that clears up the situation with Tagii.

Depends on what you shoot them with.
If what you hit them with doesn't penetrate their armor, then shooting them makes them VERY happy.
It means they're clear to respond with weapons bigger than the one you shot them with. Much bigger. And big guns makes for happy grunts.

Re: Schlock Mercenary III: One million years of crowdsourced kitten videos
Bit confused with the Tagii situation now. Why did Ennesby save her? If he could somehow tap into her tactical genius then there'd be a good reason for it, but we now learn that isn't actually possible, so why's she in there?

My guess is because she can't tap into her tactical genius. She is harmless snd Enesby pities her.

Re: Schlock Mercenary III: One million years of crowdsourced kitten videos
Anyone else notice that Tagii's form keeps on changing?

Yep, I think she is drifting back to sanity without really knowing it.

So... anyone taking bets on how this thing is going to turn out to be a giant ancient weapon?

Bet.
The author isn't clumsy enough to repeat the same bloody twist.

I bet it will turn out to be an ancient weapon that wiped out all the planets in the system. Then the victorious evil overlord dismantled his equipment and left the giant hulk to drift about the star.

It's full of kittens. Poisonous, indestructible, terrible kittens.

Once is an accident, twice is coincidence, three times is enemy action.

Oisiri was not a weapon - that was just a theory proposed by some UNS brass. On the other hand, Credomar was not ancient. The only common denominator is, that in both cases something threatening was unleashed upon the galaxy.

Re: Schlock Mercenary III: One million years of crowdsourced kitten videos
My guess is we'll see a return of the diamond ants (from that short arc about cleaning an infestation from a ship). We never saw how the adult ants looked.

Given how dangerous the young'uns were (just two of them wiped out the entire Tough squad apart from Schlock, and even he only survived by eating the bodies of the others to bulk up!) I'd be seriously doubting we'll see those again, unless the Toughs are warned in advance.

Currently the they will fight in open spaces instead of corridors and have better equipment - they have gone through several armor upgrades at the very least. It would be tough but not unthinkable.
-
Re: Schlock Mercenary III: One million years of crowdsourced kitten videos
I would think they had that failure in mind when they upgraded their equipment. They wouldn't be caught by surprise twice by the same buggers.

Meh. Semantics. Oisiri creates invisible, omnicidal agents of mass destruction. Credomar is a giant gun that was then converted into a colony to hide it's purpose, and stayed a colony long enough that most people seemed blissfully unaware of that purpose.
The fact that you knew what I was referring to is also telling.

Nothing but semantic. I was going to ask what the 2nd occurance of that plot twist was when he mentioned Oisiri, but even that doesn't make sense. For multiple reasons:
1- Oisiri wasn't a weapon. It was an egg/incubator for Eldritch abomination.
2- The fact that it was dangerous, ancient and powerful wasn't a plot twist. It was established very, very early in that storyline
Even if Oisiri was an actual weapon, #2 really changes the "twist" status of the story. It's a completely different story structure. Oisiri Book's twist was about the Frankenclones more than anything else. Oh, and that it was an incubator.

Well, I suppose that begs the question, though--why would you want to do this unless you were intending to use said abomination as a weapon? It seems extremely unlikely it was for the purposes of study, because if you already know how to *create* a dark matter entity one assumes you already know a lot about them!
