I'm too young to go about making an account for deviantart or photobucket.:smallfrown: Does anyone know a website with no age restriction I can use to share my avatars?
You can upload to ImageShack without an account, so maybe that could work for you (or maybe they don't have an age restriction - I don't know). You would just have to make sure you don't lose the link, as you wouldn't have a way to look it up later without an account.
Thanks! That should help me set up my avatars so I can officially become an avatarist.
I wonder if it worked...
It clearly didn't...
If you say what you tried maybe we can help :smallwink:
But from what I see I think you tried to specify a local file (since your link just points to just "battlemindhuy.png" - which does not what you want, it points to the website "battlemindhuy" on the top-level-domain "png" (which isn't a used top-level domain - so the link just gives a "server not found" or something like that)).
So probably you need to upload it somewhere (your own webspace if you have, or something like ImageShack or PhotoBucket [see the first post for some more details on it]), and than using the direct link to the file (so something like http://sometihng.site.xy/path/to/file.gif)
I'm trying to upload an image, but he keeps giving this error:
There are no subscribed threads to display in this folder for this time period.
I must be doing something really silly wrong, but I can't find out what...
Here's the image:
http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/...ps57ae11e5.png
EDIT. Oh. never... never mind
My avatar won't show up. It's saved on Paint.Net. This is the address I typed in:
http://finalgiantitpavatar.png
I also can't find on the edit options where the pixel dimensions of the avatar are. My page ends right after the url entry.
If your image is saved on paint.net, that needs to be part of the address you type in.
You no longer need to put in the pixel dimensions for your avatar, so you can ignore that bit of the instructions (it does need to be no larger than 120x120 pixels for it to all show up, though).
You mean the image-editing program? I don't think they have hosting, and it certainly isn't integrated into saving, and the site paint.net seems to be unrelated as well. I'd recommend uploading to some hosting site like photobucket or whatever.
I was using the picture editor. It confused me because the file name ended with .png
Alright, I'll work on setting up a photobucket. Thanks.
...Okay, so how do you get the picture url off of photobucket?
Once you've uploaded the image, click on the "Direct" link on the right side of the image's photobucket page (clicking on the image in your gallery or the upload screen should take you there, if you're having trouble). Otherwise, you could right click the image and select "copy image location".
Hope that helps!
Thank you everybody! I still have a couple of things to take care of, but you've set me on the right path.
I don't know if I'm doing it wrong, but the URL appears to be too large to fit within the field provided. This is the URL provided. http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/v...lder/Jaune.png
Even if I edit out the spaces, it still comes out a bit too long. Is it a problem on my end?
GitP doesn't like spaces in Photobucket folder names. You'll need to actually rename the folders to something without spaces. Once you've done that, use the direct link listed in the "links to share this photo" not the link you've posted here. I'm not sure if the link will still be too long, but I know both of those are issues Photobucket users have had in the past.
Yeah, first of all there seems to be troubles with spaces (so you would need to provide a link without spaces; masking them with "%20" didn't work for me).
On top of that it seems that the form limits links to 100 characters, so you also need to shorten that link. So the easiest way would be to create a short folder without spaces and add it on the top level of your Photobucket account.
Certain kind of url shortening/redirecting stuff could maybe work, but I'm not certain on that part and it might be hard to get it the way you want it. So putting the picture somewhere else in your Photobucket account where it produces a shorter link without spaces is way easier (and should work in all cases).
PS: If you have other files in your Photobucket-folder and linked them somewhere else (or you have this avatar linked to from another site), you should not rename, unless you want to change all those links. Editing/Moving a folder (name) will change all direct links! So to be safe just copy your image in a suiting (e.g newly created) folder.
I was wondering how I could get rid of all the white space in my custom pic. It would just look so much better without it...
Trouble is I have not idea how to make the white transparent.
For what it's worth, I used GraphicsGale to draw it.
You'll have to draw it on a transparent background and save it in a file that supports transparency (you've got it as a .png now, so your file format is good -- you just need to use a transparent background instead of a white background).
Seems to have worked! took me bit to figure out the transparency on my program, but I figured it out. Thanks!
No problem! Sorry I couldn't be more help -- that's not a program I've ever used.
My avatar isn't showing up either. This is the URL: http://www.legendsofglory.com/glory/...nual_thief.png
Not terribly familiar with how this kind of thing works, so not sure if I should put it on deviantart or resize the picture first.
Nevermind, seem to have sorted it out :)
Hello
I have a problem with changing avatars. I got a costume avatar before the remake of the forum, and now that I thought of changing to it there seems to be a problem. I only have the already checked option of “Do not use an avatar” – nothing else. Which is also strange since I can clearly see the avatar I’m using at the moment…
(I followed the FAQ-link since I could not find the Edit Avatar)
Have the policy for avatars changed? Or are there some technical issues? Or am I simply missing something?
Thank you
Sorry, it turns out I was following a bad link... my bad
This thread is awesome because nearly everyone got their issues fixed and has a cool custom avatar. That being said, how can I eliminate the white background on mine?
Depends on what is actually the problem you have. :smallwink:
There are basically two solutions:
- Upload a version with a transparent background. I don't know whether your source file has a white or a transparent background, but in all cases you need a file format that actually supports transparency. .jpg (as you have right now) doesn't support it, so you need to use .png or .gif. Both work fine.
- If for some reason you are restricted to .jpg or have trouble to figure out how to set your background to transparent (though it should be doable - even if you only have that .jpg file it should be possible with Gimp or other image processing software to set it to transparent.), you could also cheat a bit and change your white background to the color of the user info background color. (Which should be #F0E7D3 )
So it is possible that you have a usable source file but exported it to the wrong file format or it is even possible that you have the right file but the pace you uploaded it changed it. In the latter case (if it gets automatically converted to .jpg) you either need to change the place you upload it (both PhotoBucket and ImageShack should work for that) or use the colored background workaround.
Maybe I'm just stupid, but I can't seem to find the "Edit Options" to change my avatar, or any option to do it. Please help!
Unfortunately the OP of this thread is a bit outdated. There was a forum upgrade recently and the details have changed a bit. (For example there is no size option either, though that was changed even before the upgrade.)
- You need to be on the Desktop Site to edit your avatar (or options in general), so if you are on the Mobile Site, you need to Switch to the Full Site. A link for that should be on the bottom of each page. (If you want to switch back afterwards, the Desktop Site has a theme-drop-down-menu on the bottom left of each page.)
- On the top right corner on each peach you see "Welcome, YourUserNameHere // Notifications // My Profile // Settings // Log Out". Click on Settings
- On the left side, you find three boxes with different contents (My Messages // My Subscriptions // My Settings). Click on General Settings, which can be found in My Settings -> My Account.
- The avatar options are the last three options on that page, so scroll to the bottom.
- Change whatever you want to change and save your changes using the Save Changes button.
(You should also be able to use the links I posted.)
What is the software used to create said avatars and upload them to photobucket?
To upload stuff to photobucket you don't need any special software (other than a regular browser).
To make a avatar you can use any image processing program you want to use or are familiar with. Free options are GIMP or Inkscape. If you want a stick figure avatar Inkscape is probably the better choice, because it is a vector based program, but I haven't used it, so I can't say anything about it.
And probably this sort of questions is better be asked in the Arts and Crafts subforum, too :smallwink:
I figured it out. And many thanks to you sir!
But how do I fix the size, it's cutting the bottom off of my picture.
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4083/xech.png
The maximum avatar size is 120x120 px. Yours is 120x150, so you need to crop and/or resize it to be 30 pixels smaller in height. If someone created it for you, you can ask them to edit it, or if you created it yourself, edit it in whatever program you used to make it. Some hosting sites also allow you to edit a hosted picture, but as far as I know, ImageShack is not one of them (may be worth double checking, though, as it's been a while since I used it).
If you only have an iPad, I don't know the answer, sorry. I do know that there are image editors which can resize it for you, some free, some not, but I do all my editing on the computer. You can also upload it to a site which allows you to resize the image after upload. But, again, I do all my editing myself on the computer, so I couldn't tell you which sites do that.
On the first post in this thread, Gorbash Kazdar says:
It is suggested you read over the avatar and signature rules before you get started so that you don't run into any problems later.
"avatar and signature rules" is a hotlink to http://www.giantitp.com/forums/announcement.php?a=39, but when I go there, I get an error:
Sermil, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Unfortunately the OP is a bit outdated (it was done before the forum software updated, and even then it was out of date). The Avatar & Signature Rules can be found as part of the regular Forum Rules (which can normally be found in the upper region of each forum page).

The OP is a bit outdated (we had a forum update since then).
Click "Settings" in the upper right and then find "General Settings" on the left (or take this link). At the bottom there are avatar related options.
Is there a way to still resize avatars? Not seeing that option. Also, I don't have permission to view the rules concerning them.
I've been having trouble with my custom avatar:http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Sou...darkwizard.jpg.
Lets see if this works: http://s923.photobucket.com/user/Sou...d.png.html?o=0
Do you have the image url?
I want to ask why my avatar url link will not work, but its kind of hard to do when you apparently cannot post the site address without a post count of 10 or higher, even in a thread whose entire purpose it to help newer people.
The most common problem is a space in the url. (Which will display as "%20") If that's not the issue, then Hamste's suggestions for posting will get you on the path to getting help.
1) Why is there no upload allowed?
2) Why does the site not have a mechanism for resizing images properly.
3) Why does the site not allow direct link urls that have too many characters?
1) Basic necessity to keep the forums running.
2) Because they are not uploaded to the server, so the server has no control over them.
3) I think you answered your own question, they have too many characters. A limit needs to be placed somewhere, and the current limit allows the vast majority of use cases for using images hosted on sites designed to allow you to upload and embed images.
Please don't colour the text of your posts red. Red is reserved for official moderator messages. Additionally, please don't colour the entirety of your posts a different colour. It can greatly affect readability, quotability, and moderatability of your posts, and if it becomes an issue may fall under the "excessive formatting" rule.
We will not be going into the details of how the forums run behind the scenes. Suffice it to say, most other forums aren't as large or busy as these are.
i don't have any idea.
Then why did you post?
I'm trying to get a custom avatar.
As you can see, it's currently looking incredibly zoomed-in and blurry.
The problem is that this is not the avatar before I've tried resizing it so that it'll fit.
This is the avatar after I have resized it. The version that I'm currently using is 80 x 80; before that it was 117 x 117, which was slightly less-zoomed in and slightly less blurry, and before that it was 150 x 200.
Paradoxically, it was the 150 x 200 avatar that was the least zoomed-in and blurry - it didn't quite fit in the 'box', so to speak, but it was actually recognisable.
Can anyone explain what's going on and how I can fix it?
EDIT NOTE: I have tried using Gravatar links as well. Despite the fact my link differs only from a friend's in the email hash at the end (since obviously we have different emails), his works and mine doesn't.
EDIT 2: It's finally working, though for no explicable reason.
