I honestly don't know. It is supposed to be a mental conversation, and there are distinct points where speaking out loud is actually an important distinction.

What do other ponies think?

I'd recommend italics for conversation directed at each other or non-conversation, whichever there is less of, and quotation for anything that is said out loud.
