He asks, his tone of voice innocent and reasonable, even helpful, as he corrects what he sees as a lapse of judgment. He isn't pointing his gun at Charlie, that would be a dangerous proposition, but he is readying himself. People only get away with shooting to wound in the movies.

"You'd be far better off using your standard issue pistol."

Then he changes the subject, as it's getting a little personal. "And how are you holding up? School interesting at all?" It's his turn to be worried about her. She's over-sensitive, and school's a saturated environment, that's probably a little overwhelming to a girl whose usual social calender contains a maximum of five people.
