Something about that book cover intrigues me. Alternia sure is technicolor isn't it? Is that veritable paragraph on the vacillating heart/spade the title?! I'm almost sure it describes just about everything Karkat just said to Dave.

That was only on Jade's planet, Kanaya's planet was already covered in water, the pefect land for frogs. Herphestus (or whatever Dave's denizen is called) aparently needed the forge to make weapons, perhaps it is simply a way of super-boosting your alchamy.

I don't think complete flooding is perfect for Frogs, other animals to prey on would need a suitable environment. Frogs live in moderately wet environments, they are amphibians so they need some land,

On the Skaia topic I did mention that the spermlike tadpole enters the egglike Skaia. They may even be proportional size.
