There are a number of explanations of what's going on right now. The main problem with them is that what's going on right now is still boring. We haven't had a serious threat in two and half years of strips, and now the comic's most powerful beings are appearing in front of the heros, not all together but one-by-one, making the process as slow and predictable as possible, and killing themselves. It could work in any other story, but not here.
