So would anyone be so kind to lend a suggestion on a good program that resizes .pngs? All the ones I've tried (including the most recent version of PSP) leave a strange white border around the avatar, like the program converted it to .jpg and cropped it and hoped I wouldn't notice.

For resizing, have you simply tried GIMP ?
It's free and it'swhat I use for post Inkscape manipulations on my avatars when needed (as well as conversion to pngs. you actualy open the svg with gimp then useittosavein png, there's very little lossor resolution atthe diferenceof exportingit with Inscape in a photoshop document. Howeverone thing to dois tomake sureyou convert all 'objects to path' in Inkscape first.) and it generaly works fine

Otherwise do you still have the svg ? Because it'd probably just be easier to resize in 120*120 in Inkscape then reconvert into a png.
