And maybe I came off a little hard there. Sorry.

But I do think it's a little unfair to call it OOC when many authors (I at least) put a lot of effort into staying true to the characters and the setting, to specifically not be OOC even if it's a different genre and different tone than the show.

Mmm. This seems to be the core of the matter, seeing as we're back to the show being or not being a representative sample of Equestria. IMO the flavour of the show is the same as the flavour of the setting, and of ponies in general. In yours, this is not the case.
