In general, having your head blown off adds a bit of passivity, especially when someone shines a very bright and painful light at you.

Another sign might be that the shadow has stopped flowing out of the wounds, and normal blood is just coming out. Heavy, pained breathing is involved, as well.
Yet another sign that the battle's over is the end of the battle music.

The Wizard, Rick, and Honn-Tyr (I think that's the one that participated more in the battle) each get 137 EXP! They also each get 56 Gold! The Wizard also got a metal glove (Magical attacks do [Shadow] element while worn!), Rick got a fancy bandana (25% chance of an accidental Intimidating Aura of Coolness!), and the Honn-Tyr gets a Shadow Rope (A short rope that becomes more powerful in brighter light, and completely immaterial in deep shadow!)
