Played well and given support, engineer is hands-down the strongest class.
Engineer is potentially the strongest class, but the level of proficiency it requires to make an offensive push as Engineer (even with a pre-built L3 Sentry or the ridiculously-fast-building Mini-Sentry) is much higher than you can expect on a public server.

Plus, it was on Dustbowl. I've seen some crazy offensive Engineer antics on Dustbowl, but without a team that can take out guarded Level 3 Sentries on the point, it's not happening.

Engineer is also one of the more frustrating classes to play... besides the lack of choice in your loadout (three weapons for the primary and secondary slots, four for melee, disregarding any weapons with only cosmetic differences), you have to spend a lot of time to get set up without getting much of a result... people focus their firepower on you, may get upset if you don't have all your stuff built right away, and you can kiss your combat effectiveness goodbye if your allies don't realize that you're just as bad at holding positions alone as they are. Half the time it's like you're trying to pull the weight of a Heavy-Medic pair while also taking twice as much fire.

Plus, an Uber can set an Engineer back by possibly even a minute, while it'll only set back the other classes by about the time it takes to respawn (except for a Medic caught in the fire, who may or may not have lost a significant amount of his own Uber).
