A storyteller's companion is not necessarily a stop-gap. Do you have the ST companion? I do, and I can say that the use you can get out of it is marginal, as the powers they attribute to the different types of Exalted? Hilariously bad, in terms of applicability to the system.

Look at any setting or series that involves multiple books. They are all doing the same thing as Exalted, and for similar reasons(money is part of the equation, as well as timing, logistics, etc).
