However, since you're knowledgeable about poisons and such, I want to give you the responsibility to watching over us and making sure we don't get poisoned. If someone manages to get past you and poison us, we'll know you weren't...vigilante."

This why, if anybody gets poisoned again, the blame will fall squarely on Skeever one way or another. It is also a way for Skeever to prove his worth.
