Yamask is the spirit of a dead human and it's mask is it's face from life. And it remembers it's former life. Sometimes it looks at it's mask and cries.

Cofagrigus, it's evolved form, swallows people and turns them into mummies.

Gengar steals the life from people lost in the mountains.

Misdreavus actually feeds on fear.

Cubone wears the skull of it's dead mother¹.

If you look into Dusclops' body to see it's spectral fire, it steals your soul.

Shuppet feeds off malice and vengeance.

It's evolved form Banette, hunts down the child that abandoned the plush doll that it came from.

The first Froslass is said to have come from a woman lost in the mountains (with the implication she froze to death).

And that's just the ghost types (and one ground type).

¹I have NO idea how that works with breeding...

though, I've never seen a Pokemon work where a Main Character has to be talked out of Suicide, nor a Pokemon turning into a Giant Undead Dragon with a Nuke on it's back because the Trainer was Getting Impatient for it to evolve.

Edit, as for Cubone, I think it's supposed to be either a legend explaining why Cubone is such a Cry Babby, or Gameplay and Story Segregation.

Or, you know, it could be that, in the games, the Pokedex's are being written by unsupervised 10 year olds?
