November 1, 1755: An earthquake with an estimated magnitude in the range 8.5–9.0, followed by tsunamis and widespread fires, destroys Lisbon and kills tens of thousands of people. The event triggers an important evolution in Enlightement philosophy debates, causes major political upheaval in Portugal, and prompts a systematic inquiry which will eventually lay the foundations of seismology.
