Jumping up and down he gestures wildly-- "Over here! Heave this branch that way! It should pivot the whole trunk, and that think branch will serve as a fulcrum, and give poor Tom a few inches that we need to pull him out!" Hiram shouts orders with complete confidence.

Basically, i'm trying to use his mechanical knowledge to provide a "help" advantage. Maybe that can't be done, in which case i'll provide unhelpful advice.
