Compare Boromir's character arc to Siegfried's. Last I checked Tolkien didn't make every single morally ambiguous character basically go full sauron.
I have no objections to black & white being present, but the way Mookie described his issue with Siegfried came across like him objecting to having any character venture too far outside of the black/white dichotemy.
