There are no mechanics for gaining a cohort. Hired mercs are just that -- dudes you find in a city and you pay to travel with you. They're not going to be very high level -- probably 3rd level at most. They'll take a share of the XP and may want a share of the loot on top of their daily pay.

If you really want a cohort, you'll have to let your DM know and do some RP for it.
