While they are not needed, you can look at getting a walking pole (or pair). I have rheumatoid arthritis, and when it is flaring up and my ankels are stiff, or I've just strained a muscle or something, it can make a real difference. Also helps you go further & work more muscle groups.
I second trekking poles. They are amazing at helping with pressure and balance, I haven't fallen on a hike since I got mine and I have been hiking in mud and snow all winter.

Aside: I hit 335 today. This is the weight I was at when I started grad school, and lower then when I was 23-24.
