From what I understand, the tree itself actually stores a considerable amount of carbon, which gets released when you chop it down and process it.

Depends on what you do to process it or dispose of it. Burning it releases pretty much all of the CO2 it absorbed in life. Turning it into pencils or solid wood furniture, less so, since they're still mostly long strains or carbon.
