Like Ludo, Elsa had never expected to be playing the waiting game. "I'd say it's the best thing we can do," she said slowly. "We can fight them off more easily from behind walls. If we go out and look for them, we might get ambushed."
She hoped nothing was amiss. They wanted the book, did they not? So they would come for it.
"We'll have to make sure the fort looks woefully unprepared for an attack. Maybe even leave the gates open, as in peacetime. We want them to attempt a frontal assault; it's our best chance of beating them. Otherwise they might attempt something harder to counter, like taking hostages."
She remembered all too well the witch hunter and his men. Things had been messy, and could easily have been messier still.
