No, in my mind, an optimized character should be able to fly by level 6 or so.

We'll have to disagree on the fly. But the first point, yeah the fighter should have had SOME options... even if it was just "I take out my composite longbow +4 strength"

I've seen players try the longbow route, it doesn't accomplish a whole lot, and if it does, it's slow and tedious.
