My lack of a legal name laughs at your Idealistic assumption that laws must make sense.

As I said it's a technicality. For all intents and purposes [REDACTED] is my legal name until I change it, but technically I don't have one. You can even avoid the official process if you can get the passport office to accept the change.

Heck, naming laws are loose enough here that I could name a kid 'Help I'm Stuck In A Passport Factory'. Which is probably another reason that I should never raise any.

If there's a name on your passport/drivers license/NHS card, you have a legal name, and that's it (unless you changed it and haven't updated it). Or, if you'd like it from the UK government directly...

Your legal name, in the U.K., is the name you are generally called and known by.
