My Sprachgefühl (LEO tells me this word is used in english as well...) tells me the proper article for the Snarl should be "Der", since "Das Snarl" is not so easy to pronounce.

Knoten or Snarl, that's the problem. In English, it means both "Knurren" / "Zähnefletschen" and "Knoten" (and some similar stuff, see www.leo.org). Untranslatable. Maybe we can translate it with Chaos? Wirrwarr? Tohuwabohu?
