Well time is fleeting and so is my memory

But even then, if no-one is certain what it does, why steal it? Surely going through the case of using powerful magic and committing breaking and entering and murder are things that would be completely wasted if it actually was a bottle opener.

Someone must know something about what it does. Something big enough to warrant these kind of actions.

Or they could just by psychotic. Both are kinda likely.

I'm not going to answer that just yet; it would reveal too much about the main villain. Let's just say you'll find out eventually.
