Itagaki swallowed her mouthful of rice. "But I do not speak your language, nor do I know how to use your weapons," she pointed out reasonably. "How can I pass for a member of your army? And if we should arrive among the Zhermans, how will we fight? You have no weapon. I am skilled with my naginata, but your weapons kill at a distance, and my death will mean nothing if I do not find the one responsible for killing my father first."

"If we appear among Germans, then we will both likely die," Mikhail said simply. "I have no control over this stone. I do not know where it will send us to. If we appear among my people, well, my cultural is based on deception and falsehood. I can lie with the best of them."

He sipped his tea and thought about a cover story with a small smile. After all, I won't be the first General to have acquired a foreign lover by conquest. Given our officer corps, it is a believable story.
