If it were me, they'd represent un- or semiconscious obstacles, or things I just generally don't like, that I un- or semiconsciously didn't think I could stand up against. If it were me, they'd be certain aspects of our worldview, spokes in the flywheel of society.

No, that's not right. My unconscious generally has an attitude that's more like, This isn't going to work, but I'll try anyway.
