It's actually an ellipsis, ellipses is the plural form. Most commonly it takes the form of three dots ( . . . , ... or …), but could be an em dash (—), several en dashes (––) or even a trio of asterisks (***).

It originally indicated an omission from the original text copied, but can also indicate a pause, an unfinished thought, or a sentence trailing off.

The word comes from the Ancient Greek elleipsis, meaning "omission".
