"The archives? For the Bolter Shells? Very well. May I ask what this is about?" Replies Turket, getting up from his chair and moving over to a Filing Cabinet in the corner of the room. He opens it and takes out a large folder which he then places on the desk. "Read them at your leisure." He sits back down in his chair and allows you to read the archives.

The archives state that 2000 Shells are collected officially as part of the Planetary Tithe and the rest are sold to private buyers. There are a few dozen names listed that have purchased Shells from this Factory, although you have no idea if these buyers are legal buyers or indeed non-heretics or non-xenos.

    Esther

Having hit the ground swinging, Esther continues as she set out, her flail spinning round her in a deeply unstable spiralling orbit. She has the theory of this all worked out - of course, it was simply application of natural philosophy - but practice is a little different. A slight shuffle of the feet corrects the course so that it angles directly into the prone ganger.

OK, modifier stacking time. +10 for outnumbering an opponent (Esther and Mira going for the same enemy), +10 for attacking a prone opponent, I think? If the two overlap, Fall, then I'll readily change it.

    Two standard attacks with a flail on prone dude, (1d100)[45] and (1d100)[2] vs. WS 39 + 10 + 10 = 59, for a total of (1d10+6)[11] and (1d10+6)[16] respectively.

Don't you wish you were stoving the heads of baddies in rather than do boring talky-talky, Moral Wiz, Ceridan, et al.?

Edit:By the Emperor, that's nasty. While I'm fairly sure that the poor guy's not getting back up, Emperor's fury is on the other thread. OK, that's +6 damage from Emperor's fury. Poor ganger ...

As a sharp jolt resonates its way up the handle of the weapon, Esther pales and loosens her grip on the weapon. The man ...

For Esther, her fellow butcher's gutting of the second guard is nothing, silent, out of sight, and most definitely out of mind.

There is only the corpse in front of her. Her corpse. The corpse that she made. Was it her corpse if she was the killer? Had she even done this - ended the life of another, a life that the Emperor had given, had she dared to take it away? Her hands shake a little under her scrutiny, as if they are trying to give the blood covering them (and her robes, too, by this point) the slip.

Calmly, without any great ostentation or even a great deal of conscious thought, she kneels by the corpse, one hand on her aquila, one closing the man's eyes - a maneuver taking much more care than was commonly (and perhaps happily) known, intoning the Grace of the Emperor in a precise and fairly emotionless way.

    Spoiler
    Show
(No modifications, although someone else might pass the test) Turket heads back into the main Factory area, although his Guard remains in his office.

"This is the Forge Room!" He announces as you enter the room you went through to get into Turket's office. "This is where the shells are cast from molten metal. We leave a small hole in the shell so that we can insert the explosive material that makes Bolter shells so famous. That happens near the end of the line, we'll get to that later." He leads you over to two large furnaces. "These are our primary furnaces. The chimneys you can see from outside the Factory are connected to these Furnaces and they take the smoke away from the shells. We put titanium ore into special buckets and place them in the furnace. When the ore turns into liquid, we pour it into tray molds to take shape. The liquid quickly cools and the shells are then sent down the conveyer to the inspection and labelling room." He points to the conveyer. "That conveyer starts at the end of this room and runs all the way to the delivery hatch at the other end of this Factory." He then points to the unlit furnace. "Unfortunately this furnace became too worn to use effectively and so we decided to decommision it. We've yet to scrap it entirely."

(Make another Awareness test please, the should be the last Awareness test)

Turket moves onto the next room. "Ah, the inspection and labelling room. Because the molds don't always come out right, we use servitors to carefully inspect each and every shell to make sure it is of acceptable standard. If it is, it is stamped with a number and it continues it's journey down the conveyer. If it's not acceptable standard, it gets thrown back in the furnace." This is indeed, correct, as the conveyer belt takes several loops, around which dozens of servitors visually scan the shells, as well as weigh them in their hands. If acceptable, a device on their wrist slaps a label onto the shell and the servitor puts it back on the belt. If not acceptable, the servitor throws it in one of a few bins placed around the belt.

Turket then moves onto the final room. Inside this room, the conveyer belt, carrying labelled shells, carrys the shells behind a wall with a layer of viewing glass all the way across it. Near the end of the wall, the conveyer belt reappears and the shells then drop into a container. Also inside the room is a crane and a large hatch. "This is where we add the explosive element. Unfortunately we cannot enter the explosive storage for safety and security reasons, but you can view the process through this viewing glass." He invites you to look through the glass and through it, you see the individual shells grasped by a metallic arm, while another inserts what looks like a small, black, lumpy bead inside the shell. Once the bead is inside, the hole is covered with some sort of spray and shell continues on to the container at the end of the conveyer belt. "The shells go here into these containers." He points to several sealed crates. "When we make enough shells, the delivery truck comes by and we use the crane to lift the crates onto the hatch, which will be open when there's a delivery to be made, and the crates then slide onto the trucks container. The shells then go on to be blessed by a shrine to the Machine God and then sold to whomever has interest in buying them. Or collected as part of the Plantery Tithe." He claps his hands together and rubs them with a smile on his face. "And so ends the tour. Any questions?"

Picking up her flail, Esther folds it neatly, tidily, aseptically - despite the rent chips of bone nestling among its cords like unwashed hair - and places it in her pack. All the while, she continues to speak, softly, but clearly.

When it was over, when the blood had dried and the fires had died down, then we found we were the same as we had always been - small and terrified human beings, with only the light of the Emperor to see by in this dark galaxy of sin.'

As she looks at Mira, it's as if her eyes refocus. With an effort, she hauls her frame out of its slump, and weakly smiles at the other abbatoirist.

Then we shall go. Find out why Inquisitional informational sanctity was breached - find a way through to Turkett. We hope.

Slipping over in the slew of gore that now coats the hab's rockcrete paving, the Sister went sprawling in the former hiver's viscera. Slowly, painedly, and just this side of hysterical distress, the draws herself back to her feet. It's more as if something's pulling her from above than her pushing from below.

Korland tags along on the "grand tour", bored completely out of his skull. Still, beats getting shot at.

While Turkett seems to think his Bolter factory is the most fascinating thing since someone had the bright idea of giving heavy ordnance to the chancers, Korland's main thought is that it looks like a factory. And once you see one factory, you see them all - whether they make guns, pottery or farming tools. So he tramps along, keeping an eye out for anything out of place and trying to look interested

The emperor has truly blessed us. He has guided us in killing out enemies and covered your cleanness with well earned blood. No evil spirits would dare intrude on such a holy gift.

She stood back up and helped the sister up and they slipped out of the radius of the gore. Once beyond the pool of blood Mira scraped her boot against the ground removing any blood she could. She then pointed at the side entrance and swung her shotgun from behind her and checked it was full. She readied and and began to jog towards the door moving low.

Since I failed, do I need to read your post, or is it irrelevant to me?
You can read the post, the post is for everyone in your 'group' to see. I'll simply not reveal something important if you fail a test.

(Hmmm... not the greatest rolls ever. If you want to spend a Fate Point to reroll or Fate Points to increase the degree of success (which I'll allow you to do, even though you failed) I'd suggest doing so. drum-n-bass, you don't need to worry too much about spending a Fate Point, since they probably wouldn't do much in your case. By spending a Fate Point, you could reroll the Awareness test and would have to take the second roll as final, or you could spend 1 Fate Point to take away 10 from your roll, making it 16 instead of 26. You could then spend another Fate Point to make that 6. Although the others were closer, so I won't recommend it. Since some of you were so close to passing:)

    Turket's Office
You hear something strange as Turket walks across the room, but can't quite place the sound. (Going back in time a little bit)

    Factory Furnace Area
Something seems odd about the unlit and apparently 'unused' forge, but you don't know what. You simply get a gut feeling that there is more to the forge than meets the eye.

Meanwhile, Nihila has been left alone with the Guard all this time.

Mira moves quickly up to the door before scanning the wall for the nearest bullet holes. She tries to peer into the building and listen for any movement or other useful noises that may aid them.

The bullet hole you choose to peer through appears to be covered with something solid on the other side of the wall, meaning you can see nothing but the the black solid object blocking your view. You hear muffled voices from inside, but cannot tell what they are saying how many voices you hear. Only that there is more than one voice.

Esther spits out a small chunk of unidentifiable gristle that had found its way into her mouth, and grimaces at her companion. This was turning out to be worse than she had expected - but what had she expected? Following in the lead of the Catachan, she kneels, looking through the bullet hole. Perhaps ... perhaps this could be resolved without recourse to blood, to bones, to muscle?

We have no idea what is in there. We have seen at least eight armed men enter, and more may well be inside. I know that you're going to reassure me that the Emperor is with us here, and that we should shoot our way in, but may I counsel against putting Him to the test? Perhaps a more ... subtle route?

    Esther is pleading here.

(By the Emperor, you've picked the best possible time to do that test. Not only that, but succeeded by 2 degrees!)

Everything goes quiet and dark around you as you psychicly run your hands across the unlit furnace. To any onlookers, it looks as if the world itself is being slightly bent and sucked in, with you as the point of origin. You search the warp for answers... and find some. Suddenly an icy chill runs down your spine and your mind is assaulted by images and feelings.

You see the furnace burning a... bright blue flame. It's constantly making a quiet screaming and wailing sound. You get a feeling of deceit, Turket lied to you, lied to the officals. This was recent, perhaps only a week ago. Another image barges it's way into your mind. This time you are underground. There are 9 prison-like cells placed in a semi-circle around a raised platform, upon which is a table and a chair. Upon the table are two books. One appears Occult, the other a photo album. There are other objects on the table, but they are blurry. You get the feeling of intrigue, these books may offer a solution to somebody... to Turket. Suddenly the cells fill with one person each. They are sad, angry, depressed, hurt... doomed. You see Turket, standing next to him are a few guards. He's standing behind his desk, the Occult book in his hands. He appears to whisper something Occult, but the words sound like screaming to you. In a horrifying display of daemonic activity, each of the 9 prisoners burst into a bright blue flame, the flames reaching through a small hole in the top of the cell. These connect together, you feel, and the energy of the flames is dispelled through the furnace and the chimney it is connected to. You see Turket smile, put down the Occult book and open the other. You see pictures of Turket's family. He then closes the book and the last of the prisoners burns into nothingness. Turket then turns and heads up a flight of stairs behind the table and chair. At the top of the stairs is a wooden chair with an armed guard sitting in it. There is a set of keys on the wall next to him, as well as a button. The guard presses the button and a door opens in front of the stairs. Turket walks through the door, but the guard stays behind. The door shuts and you see Turket in his office. The door is under his carpet. Suddenly a you get a massive headache as another thought hijacks your mind. It's Nihila. There was a struggle in Turket's office. This was moments ago. The guard knocked Nihila out. He grabs the framed picture of Turket's family, the one on his desk, the one you remember. He takes out the picture from it's frame and you see a button inside the frame. The guard presses it and the door underneath Turket's carpet opens. The guard carrys Nihila into the underground area and places them in an empty cell, locking the door behind them. You get a dire feeling that something terrible is about to happen, the warp stirs greatly today. You see that all 9 of the cells are full, now that Nihila has been added to the collection. The people are scared, alone, taken from their families and friends. The guard leaves the underground area, closes the secret door, puts the picture of Turket's family back in it's frame and stands back where he was standing when you physically left the office.

The images begin to fade and the world comes back into perspective. You wipe your brow and notice you've been sweating, despite feeling icy cold. The warp has told you all it can and your mind slowly becomes your own again.
