I'm guessing this post ends up on top of the next page.

Anyway, reading Macbeth The Scottish Play. Pretty good so far, I've learned to analyze themes and symbolism from my English Lit teacher who happens to be good enough to make it fun.

    I'm reading Moby Dick.

Surprisingly, I'm actually enjoying it, once I get past the random cetology chapters.

So that's why I can't find any goats. I blame this for my lack of ultimate cosmic power. Not enough goats. It's always the way.

@Thufir: It just seems to be the ones who start on the tobacco, alcohol, and drugs at my age that are morons. (I'm sixteen) We've got a lot of redneck-type people around here, big on underage beer and chewing tobacco, and I just saw one of the administrators haul one off to the office last week. Probably had tobacco in his backpack. Moron, taking tobacco to school.

I do not involve myself with any of these things.

Also, the apathetic sorts who are "too cool to care." They frustrate me to no end.

We had a big problem with people at my high school using chewing tobacco and dip. This was mostly in the vocational building, and they weren't really dealt with. Most of the time because they would keep it inbetween class changes, in the bathroom. You could also clearly see the worn outline of a can in their back pocket.

I remember one guy getting caught by a teacher, him saying that his spit bottle contained Dr. Pepper (mind you, you could see the tobacco floating around in it). The teacher said if that's true, finish it off or get sent to the office. The guy drank it

But yeah, most people aren't like that. Most of our morons are the people who religiously follow American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, or whatever else is on TV now, as well as celebrities. They're still a minority, just an all too boisterous one.

Yuck. I find tobacco absolutely disgusting.

There's drinking and drug use at my school, but really the only drug used is marijuana, so eh. And no one chews tobacco, thank goodness.

And people don't usually do either of those at school.

I go to private school, though, so that may be different...

We've apparently got marijuana around our school, giving us quite a colorful nickname. Thankfully, most of the troublemaking is concerning things other than kids getting beaten up in the halls. I do feel safe at school, as the only fights that break out are usually between people who violently hate each other. And no one hates me.

So, yeah, I'm glad that most of our problems involve people going and getting high/drunk/oral cancer nice and far away from me.

I'm currently in Wisconsin, and there although there is no marijuana use (I think), there is drinking, but then again several are 21 or older. Smoking does bother me, as currently the are no smoking laws around Chicago, but there are some designated smoking area around the college I am attending.

There is. Go ahead and trust me on this one.

As for where I live, I'm in California. Do the damn math.

(Almost no cigarettes, though, incidentally. I myself do not smoke or drink.)

Meth is a huge problem here because we're a rural town, so the ingredients are really easy to find (in fertilizers used by the farmers).

You make it sound like you're enjoying the book in spite of its cetological interludes! Aren't they awesome? Whales are awesome. That book is awesome. One of my favourites (and I use the word awesome with its full weight, in spite of its ubiquity). Do you really find them detracting, or are you just being cute?

    Also,
Much like coffee, there is a lot of really bad tobacco in the world that leads people to believe the thing itself is a nasty experience. Bad coffee tastes like rancid and probably watery **** and tends to bestow painful gutrot. Many people who have never experienced good coffee either wonder how anyone drinks it, numb themselves to the disgust, or mask it with creamy sweetness. Good coffee, however, is another creature entirely. The difference is fully palpable to sense and digestion. Or, say, compare a Tetley "Orange Pekoe" (read: Dust) teabag in a mug with a single estate Darjeeling perfectly brewed in a covered china cup.

Tobacco is the same. Commerical cigarettes are truly disgusting, made with low-quality and adulterated shake. Most people understand tobacco only through the miasma enjoyed by those who have been fooled or who have fooled themselves to believe that this is what the experience of tobacco ought to be. Fresh, moist, good quality tobacco, whether smoked in a clean pipe, rolled in a cigar, or very rarely rolled in a cigarette recently, smells freaking delicious and burns with a sweet, agreeable smoke. Ever smelt sweetgrass burning? It's wonderful. There's a reason tobacco sat alongside cedar, sweetgrass and sage as a sacred herb before the New World was New.

This is not an attempt at snobbery; I just want to advocate that tobacco is not evil -- only its cheap shadow usurping the name.

Who knows what the hell they do to make chewing tobacco, but it's probably an adulteration too.

I like things that are shiny.

    Problems with tobacco:

    1) Highly addictive

    2) Can give you lung cancer (and other nastiness)

    3) Contains scary amounts of poisonous substances

    4) The smell makes me puke.

I do tend to find them interesting, actually...however, I will say that I would probably enjoy them much more if I were reading the book simply for fun. Although our teacher told us not to read some of the chapters, and I'm pretty sure that some of those were the more cetological ones...I know for a fact that we skipped the chapter named "Cetology." :/

I also believe you about the tobacco...when I said that tobacco is disgusting, I meant chewing tobacco, not tobacco in general.

Anyway, I should probably go to bed soon...just waiting for my clothes to finish drying so I can fold them up and go to bed...

So, apparently, it is possible to take yourself hostage.

I did not know that until last week when a local man shot some estranged friend or lover of his in a parking lot in broad daylight (trapping William Shatner there for several hours) and then fled via car, eventually being cornered at a local psychatric "Charter" facility's parking lot where he held himself hostage for the same several hours that William Shatner was trapped in the bookstore.

I am amazed at the idea, mostly due to how it was played in Blazing Saddles.

Now I want to see Blazing Saddles again.
