ugh, sounds like caveman craig. Nothing like a T-rex, a tribal attack and a triceratops.

    So.... can megabeasts mate? *grin*

Without modding they cannot. I am not sure how to mod it so they can. Giving them child tags(like the ones in dwarves) might work.

Well, I'm guessing you'll get a lot more if you mess world gen to start in year 2. So, 1% of megabeasts dead as opposed to 80%

Yeah... I could do that I guess...

How common are megabeasts if I DON'T edit the files or world gen settings? I like my current area...

Well worldgen stops when 80% of megabeasts are dead. If you start your world at year two, pretty much none are. So about 5 times. However, I'm not sure the megabeast arrival formula is based on the real number of MB's. Intuitively it should, but I mean, this is dwarf fortress :D

Edit: I think you're just getting unlucky, like with me a nd siege, though. In starting year 205, I managed to get 2 megabeasts and no sieges.

Found this snippet in the wiki...

Not necessarily a bug, but sometimes when a dragon appears in the middle of an ambush or siege, the goblins will attack the dragon, either wounding it greatly or killing it in the process.

Just like a siege, though, there is an announcement for megabeasts, so it's unlikely they accidently killed yours.

Okay, I'm having a slight problem building the tower.

The first floor of it looks something like this -

    =============
    =--------------=
    =--------------=
    =----------------
=---------------- <- Three square wide opening for wagons, where
= --------------- I intended to use floodgates as a lowerable gate.
    =--------------=
    =--------------=
    =============

The = signs are walls. Now, when I build my ramps and go upstairs a level, I can put up floors and such just fine, but I can't seem to put walls up a Z level over that three square opening. How can I remedy this? I need wagons to be able to come through, but I also need to not have a tower with a gaping opening all the way up its side.

Also, my brewer was doing wall stuff on the second floor, but got stuck and didn't move around and go downstairs to eat and such, even when there were no impediments to his passage. Bug?

    Edit: Nevermind, found the answer!

Edit part deux: Do marksdwarves take a penalty for shooting through a waterfall?

Hrm, I think it's safe to say immigration has almost no base on wealth. I've gotten 120k by autumn caravan, 110k, 100k, 40k, and 60k. The 60k and 100k I got by the FIRST Winter. The 40k, I got by first Autumn! The highest two I gpt be first spring. So far it's been inverse wealth with me, but I'm guessing it's simply totally random.

hmm... neat idea. haven't tried forifications yet so I don't know if this'd work but... put them in a one room area with a fortification outwards near your entrance during a siege, so it'd make them like blowtorch traps.

So, once again, I was forced to restart my fortress... let my tale be a warning to you... do not let your armorsmith fail his strange mood when hes best friends with your ONLY military dwarf... especially when he happens to be legendary...

On the plus side, when I restarted, the elves proved useful for once!

When they first came, I had no stone goods because I quite honestly expected a load of crap from them... Needless to say, I pumped out as many mechanisms and stonecrafts as I could. I also had to take as many cheap but heavy things off them as I could so they'd accept my goods... I know I could've just siezed it, but I don't want to risk a counterattack this early in my fortress's life... even if I am now guarded by a flying agent of death... I also want to keep relations optimal until they bring me a male for a breeding pair.

First year just ended and I've already won the game... essentially.

In this vein, stick their cages in a labyrinth beneath your fortress. One that extands as far as possible in every direction. Fill the labyrinth with pressure plates, floodgates, bridges, dangerous animals, magma pits, water flood devices and several conventional weapon traps.

    Drop goblins in.

    Let the fun begin.

Whoo! happy fun times. I start a new game and get amubushed with only 7 dwarves (!!!). On top of that, I somehow manage to miss hematite for an entire year with 5 legendary miners so there's no armor. Freakin' elves weren't any help. Kersplat :(

Edit: awesome, the rotting corpses are making miasma, further pissing the 4 living dwarves off. Hehe... miner cancels store in bin: went insane.

good god, the z-levels are confusing.

I built a staircase going down, and set up what my dwarves could see down there for being dug out. however, my miner isn't mining it out. he isn't on break, the job thing says he has "no job", even though i have three zones designated for digging and half a dozen buildings waiting to be built.

Ah, that's a problem that used to happen to me a lot - You didn't happen to place a mining designation a tile below where you meant to put the downward stairway, right? What happens when you dig a down stairway (I believe) is that it designates the tile on the Z level below to also be dug out as an upward stairway, linked to the downward one, and if you designate it for anything else then it doesn't complete the stairs and you can't get down, even if the Z level above has a downward stairway placed.

That probably didn't make sense. >.>

Edit: Err, nevermind, it -doesn't- automatically designate an up stairway; that's your problem, you need to do that on the Z level below the down stair.

See if this page on the wiki helps. It's got some side-view diagrams that might make things clearer.

Also, the DF Map Archive may help in that it'll let you see game views of staircases that work how they would look in-game. My current fort in particular has some very extensive staircases, with the south end of the graveyard near my forges Point of Interest having exactly what it sounds like you're trying to do.

I just designate an up/down staircase below every down staircase. Makes things pretty simple. Apparently dwarves can fall and break their neck on that kinda thing, but I've yet to see it.

heh, I wonder if you could train vermin with a mod. Squirrel attack of dooooooooooooooooooom!

edit: also, does anyone know the best way to hunt for stone layers? The second layer on my map is marble, and I need it to make steel. I'm not sure how stone layers work, since I usually start in sedimentary and don't really care. Should I dig outwards? Or will I run into marble if I keep going down?

Edit: bleargh, more questions. How do you make an upward ramp construction work? Designated ramps are fine, but a contructed one will not make the corresponding ramp on the upper floor.

Edit: okay first question figured out. So apparently the stone layers on the world map refer to their z-levels. So I just gotta dig down for marble :D
