Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerActually you technically can't "take 20" on anything with negative consequences. Which moving silently has. So you need to roll those :)

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerI had a vague memory of you saying that you were assuming we were taking 20 on our stealth checks to avoid having to roll with every single post. I was just posting the results of that take 20.
What do we see at the top of the staircase?

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerYeah I did... but then it occurred to me that that was kinda messed up hehe.
You can take 10 when not actually threatened... taking 20 is only for actions that have no negative consequence, and I just looked it up - takes 20x longer than normal.
I'll let you off the hook for this time, but just be aware for the future :)
There is a small landing that is one step lower than the current floor in the corner of which is a large Grandfather clock ticking away (it is 5 minutes to Midnight). It seems to be of extremely good make, very elaborate, and the ticking is virtually silent. The stairs lead downward parallel to the hallway you are in, and you see a flicker of light down there.
SpoilerLet me know if anyone is drawing themselves a map. I'm not at home so I'm doing this all from memory, but I can get you the exact distances later if you want.

Garrett
The thief nods slowly to himself and inches silently along the corridor, stopping at the set of double doors. There, he pauses for a time, listening carefully within.Last edited by Tyrael; 2009-08-15 at 04:25 PM.

SpoilerI'll assume that was a take-20 on the listen check.
You hear snoring inside.
The clock on the landing starts softly chiming Midnight. From outside you can hear the deep gong of the main city bell clearly.

Re: The Second Great War IC
Garrett
Garrett grins softly in the darkness. As I suspected, they're asleep. Then the question remains, who's that downstairs?
Holding up a cautioning hand towards Fitz to wait, Garrett creeps down the stairs and pauses on the landing, peering through the railing toward the floor below.

Re: The Second Great War IC
The stairs open up into another hallway. There are two doors and one open passageway which is a hallway apparently leading towards the front of the house, which is in the middle.
There is a stand of candles burning at the T intersection, and seems to be more light coming from further down the hallway.
SpoilerAll moves down here need you to roll a move silently check, or else I'll roll for you muahahahhaha. or something.
SpoilerAlso, the landing is actually at the very top, but we'll say you can see around enough from there

Re: The Second Great War IC
As Garrett heads down the stair case Fitz decides to split up and check out the other room where there isn't any light so as to cover the most ground possible. As quietly as he can manage he creeps around the staircase and works his way over to the door and inspects the hinges to make sure that the hinges won't create a too much noise if he attempts to open the door.
Spoilerif the hinges will remain quiet and the door is unlocked fits is going to go ahead and enter. If not I will have to work something out.

Re: The Second Great War IC
Gareth
Gareth remains on the floor for a moment while he gathers his senses, gasping wildly for air. His eyes are wide, glancing rapidly from face to face, seeking any faces in the crowd which might be familiar to him. Rising to his feet, he says, "I am fine, thank you for your concern - but I need to speak with Nemal and Devan immediately. You and you, please go find them, rouse them from sleep if necessary, and ask them to meet me with their equipment in the stables as soon as they can.", pointing at two in the group who he feels are most likely to know where they are. That accomplished, he quickly walks back to his own rooms, gathering his chain shirt, and carrying it with him to meet his companions in the stables as requested.
SpoilerIf either of you guys respond and decide you're part of the circle, assume that I ask you directly, instead - and the stables is my default for getting horses out into the city; Guardian, if you could let me know whether this is possible through the secret passage, that would be great. If it's not, assume that I ask for them to meet me at my rooms, instead.Pokemon friend code : 3067-5701-8746

Re: The Second Great War IC
Day Crew
SpoilerYour horse(s) would be stabled at the Inn, where you have rooms.
Night CrewSpoilerI think I'm slightly confused, are you guys upstairs or downstairs? Upstairs is the double door with light and snoring, so I'm assuming downstairs.
When you reach the bottom landing and step off the stairs, you notice another door, at the far end of the hallway, which leads to directly under the stairs.
Fitz nearly makes it but the second step from the bottom creaks very loudly as he puts his weight on it.
You clearly hear someone walking on stairs, thudding as if they are taking two at a time. It seems to be coming from below you, heading towards the door at the end of the hallway.
SpoilerI'll just clarify things a bit here.
Situation: The only light is from the T intersection, from further down that extra hallway, and at the top of the stairs. There is the hallway on the left, a door on the left on the far side of the hallway, a door on the right at the far end leading under the stairs, and a door just to your left. The stairs going up are just behind you.
What do you do?

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerIn that case, I'll assume that the message gets out somehow, and that Nemal and Devan meet Gareth at the stable. Out of curiosity, since I can't remember personally, can I get an update on everyone's race? Gareth is decidedly human. As best as I can tell, Zagan was the only one of us to mention his race.. Heh.
Just to make sure, Guardian - my Weapon Focus (Longsword) feat applies to the blunted longsword as well, correct?
Gareth
Once he sends individuals off to chase down his companions, Gareth quickly heads to his room, muttering apologies to anyone who attempts to stop him and ensure he's alright, giving replies such as "I'm fine..", and "I'm sorry, I need to move quickly.". Grabbing his chain shirt and the blunted sword he was provided, he rushes back down to the stables, looping a belt of leather around Flare's saddle and hanging the practice sword from it. When Nemal arrives, he finds Gareth slipping into his armor, the metal links rasping against each other in the process.
When he sees the gnome and his badger, Gareth gives a curt nod in greeting, shifting his armor about his shoulders to settle it into place. Lowering his voice so that only they can hear, he says, "Nemal, good- hopefully Devan will arrive soon. I think we need to get to the Governor's house, and quickly. I've had.. I've got a bad feeling."Last edited by Quietus; 2009-08-16 at 05:04 PM.

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerOK, the footsteps seem to be coming from below the stairs you guys are near. The part that confused me was the no light bit, there IS light coming through the door with the snoring.
Fitz: You enter the room. There is a somewhat fat man sleeping in a fairly large bed, snoring noisily. A book is splayed out on top of him as if he fell asleep while reading. The candles are burning fairly low in this room.
Near the bed are two elaborate looking bell-pulls, the ropes of which lead off into a side wall. One cord is red and the other is gold.
The room is full of bookshelves, at a quick glance you would guess there are easily two hundred books or more in this room.
Outside the window you can hear the guards chatting, several different voices although it is hard to hear above the snoring.

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerI'm assuming Fitz had the presence of mind to close the door behind him.
Fitz glances around the room to try and find a place to hide and crawls under the bed.
SpoilerHide check (1d20+3)[9] the dice gods hate me. According to this I can't even hide decently under a bed.Last edited by Mahtobedis; 2009-08-17 at 09:25 PM.

Re: The Second Great War IC
Fitz: Okay, you're under the bed, which seems to be full of very smelly clothing which you (thankfully) can't see very well.
SpoilerYou don't need to do a Hide check when you have total concealment and are not moving. But I'll keep that roll in mind in case anyone glances under the bed :)
SpoilerSo we'll wait to see what Garrett does, and if Haschel does anything (you CAN hear the footsteps, and you can also hear Fitz moving around somewhat noisily)

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerOh! I completely failed to see that. Okay, then.
Garrett
The thief grimaces to himself as he looks at the candlestand, making a mental note to look into trying to invent some sort of arrowhead filled with water.
Hearing the thudding of approaching footsteps, Garrett draws back into the deep shadows and waits, listening and watching carefully.

Re: The Second Great War IC
"... No, no detail. Yes, I was given a vision, and a powerful one at that, but I was able to glean only the most minor of things from it. A man in a cell with his hands bound, and another, perhaps his jailer, who enters and seems overly pleased with the situation. Given how <Title> Torre mentioned that the Empire wishes to destroy much of the knowledge the Order possesses, my best guess is that our .. companions, are in trouble, and if they get captured and speak of the Order's involvement in this, it will give the Empire an excuse to act openly against them. I think we should make haste to the Governor's house, and see that they haven't gotten themselves into trouble."
As he speaks, explaining his urgency to Nemal (and Devan, if he gets retconned into this), he is already saddling Flare, and glancing toward Blair. For a moment, he entertains the thought of a badger riding a horse, then shakes his head, chastising himself mentally for such a ridiculous idea. "If you're comfortable riding bareback, you can ride my pack horse, Toby, to make the trip a bit faster. He has tack, bit, and bridle, but only saddlebags, unfortunately. Would Blair have any chance of keeping up? I've no idea how quick on their feet badgers are, it might be faster for him to be carried with one of us, though it would slow our ride somewhat."
SpoilerSince I am personally unsure of even IF the monks would have proper titles, and if so, what they would be, the <Title> tag above is meant to serve as a placeholder for that. In the meantime, I'll throw a Knowledge (Nobility/Royalty), in case that might give the information - if not, that's fine.

Re: The Second Great War IC
SpoilerThe monks have no need for titles, although their nominal leader does have one, and technically they all have ranks, they aren't commonly used except in official writings.
