Toby starts talking to them in the animal language. Easy there kits, I'm a friend. Your mom is right here, see?
He winces inside, not knowing what to do about the whole orphan thing...

The fox looks over, and notices their mother that has approached really closely now. "Mom?" She smiles, and nods sadly.

Then, the fox looks over at Toby again. "I'm so hungry..."

Uhuh, okay. Toby reaches into his satchel and takes out a strip of beef jerky. He bites off a little sliver himself to show it's good, then cuts it in half and offers it to the kits. Assuming they're old enough to chew and eat solids...

[Lake]

"Ow! That hurt!" Of course she can talk underwater. Abigail probably can't though, unless she solves the problem of how to get more air after she uses up her first breath.

The mermaid lets go and rubs her arm.

Abigail points to the surface, then takes Decker up there!

Up to you whether the mermaid understands that or not.

[Lake]

Decker makes it to the surface with Abigail's help, gasping for air, and grabbing hold of the end of the slide so she doesn't have to doggy paddle to stay afloat.

The mermaid follows, and glares at Abigail from a few inches below the water.

Abigail glares back, and ducks her head under. We can't breath in the water!

She then ducks it back up to take another breath.

...now, is this a mermaid who can breath and talk above water, I wonder?

{Infirmary}

Well, my friend, Shania points out Shirley. she needs help. She lost one of her legs, and I was hoping someone here could help her get a new one.

They're old enough, just barely.

The male kit gets up, and lets his sister get up as well.

They each take a side, and start eating some of it, because it smells pretty good.

"Stupid walkers. If you didn't fight so hard, I could get you to the air bubble faster," the mermaid says from below the water. Then she swims away at high speed, flipping out of the water like a dolphin, and vanishing below.

Decker manages to crawl out of the water.

[Infirmary]

"I don't have that ability. Perhaps Dr Brianna or Dr Quinn can help," Nurse Piper says.

Abigail looks at Decker. Are you okay?

Toby lets them eat, keeping his hands still and nearby if they want to smell him.

The smaller, female one has finished eating first, and goes over to his hand to smell it. "You're really tall," she says, stating the obvious.

And, the mother has inexplicably disappeared, only to reappear at some undetermined future date.

He smiles a little, remembering that his mother he never knew was a fox laguz... And that's when Toby realized he adopted a pair of kits, foxchildren if they can transform.

Shania will sit on one of the cots, waiting for Dr. Quinn, or Brianna to show up.

She'll try to entice Shirley to come lay next to her by patting the cot.

I have yet to decide whether the ability to transform to human has been passed down to them.
So, really, it's up to you if you want him to have Adopted Foxchildren or Baby Foxi (because it sounds better than Foxes, despite being incorrect).

But you can call them Sasha and Todd, or whatever else you want to call them.

The little boy fox finishes eating for now.

"We're from over that way." He points with his nose, to the north. "There wasn't very much food, so she bought us this way to find some more."

Toby shifts uncomfortably. I... yes, she is. I'm very sorry. I'm not sure what'll happen to you... I think Inside would have a child care services, someplace for you to stay, like a foster home...

"But...where's that?" she asks, cutely. They don't know, but...stuff.

Also, I need to find a reason for them to turn to little foxchildren I'll come up with one sooner or later.

It's the big city nearby... But... But maybe I can take care of you...

'City' sounds like a scary word, to little foxes.

"Oh, you would?" asks the girl fox, who likes him because of the food that he gave.

And, if foxes could smile and make it look good, these ones would right now.

That's true, even though older foxes can thrive in urban environments.

Yeah, I would. The Druid smiles and reaches out to gently scritch behind the girl's ears.

Main Cabin

There's a black-haired man wearing a smart suit and sunglasses in this building. He looks as though he's looking for something. Nearby is a black leather briefcase.

Outside

There's a small girl of about nine skipping across the grass. She has black hair and green eyes, and she is wearing a denim dress. On her back is a battered rucksack, and she's carrying a teddy bear.

Her ears are scritched, and she pushes her head back against his hand as he does so.
It feels really nice, she thinks.

The guy fox, on the other hand, watches...and watches. He doesn't mind being left out, because he's the older twin and the man of the family.
