I've tried looking it up on Wikipedia, but I didn't understand it properly (my english is not that good).

The most common usage I've encountered so far includes all people who don't conform to the standard model "male anatomy = male personalty" and "female anatomy = female personalty". Transsexuals are the most known, though I don't think actually the most common.
Another use of the term would be for people who are like transsexuals, but don't feel bad about their body and don't want any hormonal and surgical treatment.
There seem also quite a lot of people whose gender would be "both" or "neither" and though there's not actually anything "trans" about them, they are often summed up with all the other transgender people.

First rule: Staying in the closet by pretending to be straight by pretending to be gay NEVER WORKS. Ever. No. Nuh uh. Not even then. Because one of two things will happen.

1) People will miss the "pretend" part or apply occams razor, and say "Hey, that dude/gal likes dudes/gals."

2) People will notice that despite your claims, you're spending as much or more time flirting with members of the same sex as opposite sex, and seem to enjoy it as much. And naturally arrive at the right conclusions.

It's driving my mom insane, she hates reptiles.
She really doesn't like that her son likes reptiles, she panics if she even sees a picture of a snake

Geez woman, they are not nearly as bad as you make them out to be, it's not like they will lash out unprovoked and just kill everything in sight for no reason

And surprise, they are not at all slimy.

In my experience, snakes are actually quite cuddly. (Speaking as someone who used to routinely do chores with a six-foot long rat snake draped around my shoulders.) Depends on the species (some are more docile than others, and there are some species that are typically aggressive) but some of my best friends have been snakes. I wouldn't have let people who didn't know what they were doing handle one, but that's the same with any animal. I do not understand people who are afraid of snakes -- but then, phobias aren't rational, and I suppose they wouldn't understand any of mine, either.

Can't speak for dragons, of course.

And I'd like to send Kurama *hugs* and all virtual baked goods you can eat. Though I do agree that the whole "gay/bi but I'll pretend I'm straight by pretending to be gay" act is usually pretty transparent. I wish I knew what to say to help.

I think "LGBT" is more shorthand for "Non-straight sexual preferences" than strictly Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans only.

No. They just itch. Being around self deception and some neuroses feels like having soap scum all over my head. It gets itchier and itchier until I just want to scratch my scalp off or plunge my head into a bucket of water to make it stop.* It's part of why I stay away from large gatherings most of the time, and why I have breakdowns in group housing.

* Or crush the life out of the people responsible for the itching and keep squeezing until all their thoughts liquify and run between my fingers and flow away to someplace else where they can't irritate me. Stay good, golentan. Stay good.

I didn't get it, either, but I'd figured I'd roll with it. Mostly because he mentioned snakes and I'm a total geek about snakes (nothing fetishy, but they're fascinating creatures).

Well, I figured it must be enjoyed in some fashion by the people doing it.

Sort of like mimes in a way, was how I'd conceived of it. Granted, I could be misremembering camp for something else.

I saw it as immediate cultural code tags for the talking being done. Someone says "He's my best friend," and I think "Cool, they're buddies." They say it with any of 20 camp mannerisms added in and I know "Cool, they're buddies and he wants to date his friend." Different camp mannerisms change it to "Cool, they're buddies who're probably sleeping together." Of course, it can definitely be taken way too far...

Evening peoples.

I've been frequenting these forums for a while now, but I never found the need to comment in this particular thread. I'm generally reading the mechanics stuff and commenting on the player/DM issues stuff.

I happen to be a male that is attracted exclusively to men, who happens to enjoy the match between his physiology, gender identity, and concept of maleness. This would make me a gay guy, for those of you that prefer labels instead of descriptions.

If I had joined the GITP forums senior year of high school, or early college, back when I felt a strong desire to connect with the overall gay community, I might have commented on an earlier iteration of this thread.

(For the semantics lawyers among you, when I refer to the "gay" community I'm saving myself the trouble of typing out the full acronym, which is something beyond LGBTQQAIP[and others].)

In any case, I'm sharing my thoughts now because I figured I could be of some help, relating my experiences, and otherwise giving input. Plus gay gamers are just awesome, aren't we?

I haven't taken the time to read all the previous versions of this thread, so I don't know if sharing coming out stories and the like is typical, or even desirable.

I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be desirable, and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be the first or the last to do so, just so long as it's forum appropiate. Well, this is the LGBT thread and coming out obviously plays a big part in it. (Still wondering when I'll come out to my family, though I think I may have inadvertantly outed myself to one of my cousins... which is bad, because word could spread..)

Well, the long and short of it is that it doesn't matter if she ir or she ain't. There's no non-rude way to do it aside from being in the necessary environment and even then I'm not a master of the etiquette protocols of such a gathering.

Now, if you manage to get inside the gravity well, you stand a chance at gaining the capital necessary to not burn a bridge by asking. But, as is, too many variables and too much time involved to really be worth pondering actively.
