Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Castes are simple enough. I almost modded in vehicles, but body parts were just too much. The only thing I've done with that so far is the flamer marines flamer, which is a renamed stinger attached to the hand.

See castes have all the things the default has. Then you can add things like a third arm made of metal.
For example
[CASTE:TECHMARINE]
[MALE]
[CASTE_NAME:techmarine:techmarines:astartan]
[BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:ARM_TECH]
with that, a member of the techmarine caste will have a third metal arm, if the body part is there to use.
Then all you need to do is make a techmarine arm. Which I'm a bit shaky on.Last edited by druid91; 2011-02-11 at 11:50 PM.

Hopefully.
Interesting note, the gender switching also allows you to switch castes. Neat huh.
Unfortunately think I got the body part wrong.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I rarely read the development notes.
I just get too excited waiting for the new versions.
Unfortunately now is one of those times.
In the next arc we get hirelings.
by 7th release we get pets.
by the end we get pack mules.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I would be surprised if the next update didn't occur this month....then again February is a short month, but it sounds like he's almost ready for it.
02/05/2011
Nothing but testing and cleaning up left to do now.
02/08/2011
No ETA on the release, but the tests are going well.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Decided to take up adventuring. Died. Died again, Died a third, fourth, fifth and sixth time.
Still not really sure what there is to do besides die and kill/be killed by monsters. Are there any guides anywhere? The wiki doesn't have much.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
That's pretty much all there is to Adventure Mode right now.
1. You make a character
1.5(optional) wander the wilderness and kill monsters to become more skilled.
2. You go to the nearest town and get a quest
3. You go do the quest
4. If you die, return to step 1, if not continue on
5. You return and report your success.
6. Go back to Step 2

Also it can be interesting to go back to a failed fort that got wiped out by FB or goblin ambush.
If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I assert a step 2B - when you stumble across a beast (such as a Cyclops) in your travels. If you die, return to step 1, and if you live, carry on with 1.5.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Okay, here are my rules of Adventure mode. They don't have order, so pay attention to all of them. I am just writing them as I go along.
1. If you want the game a bit easier, be a human demigod or hero. Peasant is only for those who like pain, and until other races get sites, humans have the easiest time getting equipment. On the other hand, dwarves and elves can get equipment from goblins, but gobbos don't have sites at the moment.
2. Don't engage unless you have to. Throw rocks, light the entire site on fire, have your minions do the fighting. Doesn't matter, but stay back if you can.
3. Get armor. The single best way to stay in possession of all your organs is to wear good armor. Steel is best, but pretty hard to come by. If you make a bunch in a fort you can go get it if you want. Adamantine would be better, but it takes much longer to get normally. Also, a wood bin full of steel armor will stay put. A wood bin full of adamantine will get moved about.
4. Get followers. Not only will they help you not engage enemies, they will also allow you to travel at night unmolested. You still should only sleep in sites that you have cleared out or in towns and castles, but you won't get ambushed by bogeymen every time you walk about after dark.
5. Plan your journeys so you can stop at cleared sites for the night. This will allow you to avoid ambushers while you sleep and provide contingencies in case all your followers get killed.
6. When you start out, get quests until they won't give you any more. Do this all at once. This way if you get sent to kill a bandit and find that he has 50 followers you know there is someone else to kill. The biggest danger is that you run into a nigh invincible night creature.
7. If you find a crutch, keep it in case you lose use of one of your legs. A dabbling crutch user moves as fast as if they were on the ground, but if you train you should be able to move just as fast as if you weren't impaired.
Okay, now that you have my rules, how do you keep dying? Is it bogeymen, quest targets, or bandit ambushes? If you get ambushed by bogeymen and can't run away fast enough you can jump into a pit or pond that has at least 1 square that does not touch an edge and wait until dawn. Waiting until dawn is boring, but it does give a good chance to work on throwing. Just don't throw things at bogeymen who are standing at the edge of your pit. They might fall in and then they can kill you dead.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
It's also fun to roll a pocket world and then kill every sentient being within it. Turn it into an empty age.
Then start a fortress and repopulate the world with dwarves. If God had wanted you to live he would not have created me!

If there isn't anything nearby, you can fast travel out of the pit.

I've just gotten into this game. I never thought losing could be this much fun. So far I'm getting mostly into adventure mode.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
If the choices are die and sit in a pit chucking mud until morning, then I, for one, choose the chuck mud option. Among other things, chucking mud can train your agility, making it so you can run away from the bogeymen in the future.
Also, I always grab a single level in swim just so that, should the circumstances require it, I can hop into the water to escape my enemies.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
I prefer the avoid tactic. It's best if one doesn't encounter Bogeymen at all, Your strategy makes sense, but there will always be that risk of one of them getting a lucky bite in and there goes your leg.
Also you didn't suggest grabbing a single level in swim in your survival guide. I mentioned that jumping into a pool of water would be a bad idea without swim skill so that unwitting newbies didn't jump into ponds and expect everything to be okay.

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
It's a good idea to grab the first level of swimming and then go down to a lake or ocean and train it up more. At least in 40d it would also boost your strength over time.
Edit: You want to do it at an ocean or lake because they have slopes. Easy in and out. Low chance of drowning.Last edited by ObadiahtheSlim; 2011-02-16 at 10:00 AM.

Huzzah! Bees is good. I just have to hope that all of my apiarists don't get stung to death.
Edit: Looking at the patch notes, them is some nice changes. The grazing is going to make life hellishly difficult though. Maybe I can try making a deep pit with the opening on the surface and hope that grass starts to grow in it.Last edited by Aidan305; 2011-02-16 at 11:22 AM.

So coming back to dwarf fortress after a year and a half. What changes should I plan for? What ways do the layout of my fortress change?

Re: Dwarf Fortress III: Instant Fun : Just Add Magma
Oh boy! A lot has changed in a year and a half. I'm assuming that the last time you have played was 40d in which case i would give this a good readthrough
Some of the big ones are
Doctors/Hospitals for taking care of wounded dwarfs.
Caverns, Layer sections which are vast open spaces underground covering nearly all of the world which hold underground plants/animals/dangers
Overhaul of the military menu and system which...while difficult to learn at first allows more versatility over your soldiers.
Forgotten Beasts which are randomly generated monstrosities which inhabit the cavern layers. Their cousins above ground are Titans whom are now also randomly generated. YES! Randomly generated. I have gotten giant killer blobs of snow attacking my fortress.
Megabeasts were toughened....it's now nearly impossible to leave the Age of Myth without Adventure mode(Bug)
Attacks in Adventure Mode can now target specific body parts with varying degrees of success.
Souls, Dead Dorfs may come back as ghosts unless you properly memorialize them(through a coffin or memorial slab).
Materials were rewritten. So what items are good to be made into weapons and such are now based on the properties of the material. Magical Blue Metal is no longer good for warhammers, but Silver ones are because Density affects damage with blunt attacks.
and the newest release which i haven't actually tried out yet has a bunch of new stuff. Lots and lots of new types of animals and bees. Bees are wild and you need a beekeeper dorf to collect hives and make wax which can be made into waxcrafts. There's also now Pastures for your herbivores(they need grass now i think). And the site finder has been updated with a few things. Deep and Shallow metals, Clay, and soil(i think that's it). Also you can stop it at anytime now instead of having to wait to cycle through the whole map.
Also getting your nobles is pretty buggy right now. One may have to jump through hoops to get a baron and the Dungeon Master doesn't come at all. I think there's also a bug where your king arrives and dies of old age, remains friendly at the edge of the map, or just arrives normally. All of these are bugs though.
Edit:
oh...and you can also have anywhere between 6 and well in excess of 600 z-levels. Normal worlds average about 150 though i believe depending on the lay of the land. flat areas may have 40-60 and mountainous areas can have 200+
