Except when fighting skeletons. They refuse to die to slashing weapons, or so I hear.fortunately, my fort doesn't have undead.

Reclaim efforts are going well. The liaison got killed by goblins, but the fort is largely self sufficient now, and since I can catch turtles I don't have to worry about shells. Also, I sadly haven't found much copper, so I'm making all the screws for my pumpstack out of Iron. Also, though I don't believe it's been used yet, I have a gold well with a silver chain. I'm considering deconstructing it and building a solid gold well, though, what with the new ability to make metal mechanisms. It goes all the way down to an underground lake, and I don't need to build a pumpstack for it. I think the actual chain lowers like, twenty z levels, so if it DOES work I'll have confirmed that it doesn't matter how far below the well the water is.

Should I stop booze production to test this?

Also, I've been running into pathing issues with constructed buildings, sometimes. Anyone else having those?

Further also, I'm rather proud of my new and improved entrance system. the fortress proper is shut off from the rest of things entirely by a lever, as well as lockable doors. The depot room is seal able as well. The fun part is in the middle. A wide corridor made into a zigzag by floodgates, effectively increasing the distance to the doors. The floors of the zigzag will be filled with iron weapon traps, once I get the pumpstack going and can make iron on the main fortress level instead of carting everything down a ton of levels for smelting. The floodgates are all tied to a lever, which can be pulled to convert the space back into a corridor for use by dwarves during times of not being killed by goblins.

Wells will work as long as there is no obstruction between them and any tile of water at least 4/7 (or something like that) filled that's directly below it. It can go down any amount of Z-levels, and certain constructions, including other wells, to get to the water, and it doesn't change how it works even if that's 100 levels down.

Unliving are just unkillable in general. Body parts can get an unlimited number of fractures and wounds. Since they can't bleed out, they can't die.

I've had almost no trouble with basic undead. Alligators, Buzzards, foxes, and a few other things.

    All quickly killed.

Did you update your DF version? Toady nerfed undead pretty hard in a patch.

EDIT: The symbol of my civilization, my DWARVEN Civilization, is a pair of kobolds.

Well I was messing around with world gen params and I found a really cool site. Water, Sand, flux, coal, plenty of iron. It also has an exposed magma pipe!! Since I modded out most of the elf and goblin clothing (they only wear loincloths), others might not get the cave swallowman civ that is apparently living underground somewhere. If anyone wants the world gen params I can post them.

I'll need to install a new fort sealing lever, then. But I can do that pretty easily. I'm also debating whether or not to mine out any of that lovely adamantine. It would make great weapons for my Dorfs, but I really don't want to find any clowns.

Even if you seal off the fun house, the clowns will still find something to murder. In the absence of dwarves, it will be your FPS. You have been warned. Don't mine too much of that pretty blue stuff or it will end badly.

maybe I should build some sort of clown murdering chamber? if I did something with bridges and magma, I could probably seal all the clowns in obsidian.I know clowns are immune to magma, but I think an obsidian seal would work. Or maybe strategically placed cavern collapse rooms. Clowns will destroy supports, right?

Other options include cheating heavily to figure out where the fun house is, making a diagram, and then retroactively not opening the funhouse.

Problem is, calling them clowns doesn't really help. Just from reading these sort of discussions, I've learned exactly what the clowns are and where to find them without ever having encountered them myself.

Then again, it seems to be more like a bit of DF culture to spoilerise/clownify discussion about them rather than an actual important spoiler.

All friendly creatures act as though they have TRAPAVOID tags. This means traps will not hinder them. However if they are webbed, stunned, or knocked unconscious, they will trigger the trap.

Also, since the 2D days, there has always been some sort of circus deep under your fort. What exactly those clowns are and how dangerous they are is why we have the clown euphemism. Also you don't know what exactly the clown car looks like. Belive me, calling it the clown car doesn't even come close to describing what new HFS there is.

FPS complaints make me laugh. If it's above 20, I find myself having to pause it all the time just to figure out what's going on and what has been finished faster than I expected and hey wow why are dwarves dying all of a sudden. My 40d forts are usually around 15 FPS, dropping to 8 from time to time, and that's just about right.

The ONE time FPS was really a problem was when I dug my chunnel city between two continents (both projecting a little into the same ocean square, with the fortress itself on either side of the undersea road) and set up a permanently active set of pumps to keep draining the aquifer seepage. That slowed things down to about 3, and convinced me to wall off the worst of the aquifer. After that it got lots better.

I like the high FPS, because then things get done quickly. I installed a shutoff lever for the magma forge pumps just so I can turn them off once it's full and then not need to turn them on again for a while.

So does anybody else's bookkeeper invariably have a penchant for carrying around a booze barrel? I've had a few forts since the new version and my bookkeeper ALWAYS has a barrel under his arm. Evidently he's engraving records into the side of the barrel instead of chiseling them into his table now.

Figured out my crash problem. When I modded my dwarves to be SPEED:1 so I could mass dump the stones, I also modded my dwarves so the women could have beards too. Apparently if you add that tag in after world gen, it crashes when it generates your next set of migrants. Thats why I always got a crash shortly into the autumn. Either that or it was when it generated the caravan.

Anyway, new fort is fine. I'm settled into the base of the volcano. I've got like 13 dwarves and just finished my magmaworks for the metal industry. Having an exposed caldera makes taping the magma easy. Just dig a shaft down from the top and drain the magma off the top. No pump stack or any work that a miner can't take care of.

One question though. Should I pave a roof over the top of the caldera? I'm worried that some of the nasty critters in the magma sea will swim up and out the magma pipe. I haven't spotted any critters in the pipe, but that could change. I just remember how dangerous it was from the 40d days.

While mining my new well, I can across an area full of adamatinte. I was 1 Z-Level underground, so I decided to dig it it up. A message apears saying I have found caverns, or somthing like that. It then says "Horrors for the underworld have appeared!" I rushed to close off the massge from about 7 frogmen and a demon runing at my fortress. It was too late. They killed everyone in the well/mushroom farms, and flooded the farms. More and more of them came. Eventualy I was overrun with almost 23 frogmen. A few where killed by traps, but most survived. To make things worse, In the middle of the attack, a GOBLIN SEIGE came and killled verybody trying to run. The final stand was made in the store room by The dungeon master and 3 armed guards. They managed to kill a frogman, but the others swarmed and killed them. The only survivor, the dungeon master, ran into the maze of exploratory tunnels, eventual cornered and slautered by the frogs. Moral of the story: Don't dig around adamintine.

That was 40d, gonna try out then new version now.
