So, it's finally coming out after like a decade. Thats good.

It's a 3DS exclusive. Thats bad.

The 3DS won't come out in even Japan til febuary next year. Thats bad.

Judging by the official art and 3D capabilities, it should look pretty. Thats good.

I'm going to assume they've been working on it for a while in secret. They're probably also not going to push the limits of graphics and detail, as well as this being a portable release they seem to want to put out about the same time as the 3DS's japanese release.

All in all it'll probably be rushed, but odds are they've written a bit about it in the intervening decade, especially since before this several people expressed intrest since years ago from inside capcom.

Most of this was just confirmed. Inafune's had more personal contact with the game, a new visual style, and he's doing it because he KNOWS the fans will love it.

On a related note, are MM:L 1 and/or 2 available for download on any of the consoles? I remember playing 1 at a friends house as a kid (and actually kind of hating it - I was like 8! So sue me!), and I want to finish it. And then, obviously, theres the matter of the second one, which I should play before the third one.

Indeed. Odds are this announcement and release date alone are meant people get a 3DS as it freaking comes out.

I'd be complaining but I'm going to be too busy saving every scrap of money between now and then.
