"I'm not certain...We walked around and I don't really know this area. Well..."

She looks at Tom.

"How far was it Tom?"

Tom

"I'm nowehere near dry but if we keep moving I should be able to avoid getting hypothermia." Jane's words reminds Tom of the fact that he is also dripping wet and drenched to the bone. Now that he is aware of it, he begins to shiver and starts to feel the chill. To take his mind off of the chill, Tom uses it for a different matter, this being answering Jane's question that was directed at him.

"How far was it?.. I 'aint too sure, but it wasn't that long, we can get there easy. Well, Jeff would need some 'elp, but ah can carry him to the car.. What we gonna do when we get there?"

Skunk

"If it's workable, just drive it back here and pick up the others. We can't really cart the injured guy...hey, which one is it? I get confused with similar names sometimes, is the guy that got shot Jack or Jeff? Anyway, once we get everyone together, we can find the nearest hospital and deal with that. From there, I guess we can do whatever. We just need to go from here back to whatever passes for civilization."

He shifts his weight and sets the rifle down on the counter to his side of the sink.

"I missed my poker game tonight, as it is. I dunno 'bout the rest of you guys, but I have a job to go to tomorrow, and...damn, I gotta be in at like seven A.M. Anyone got the time? And we have new stock coming in, too. Damn, it's gonna be a crap day for me tomorrow."

As the group speaks amongst themselves in the kitchen, Tom notices an old looking clock above the double doors, though in the bad lighting, he can't tell whether or not it is still working. A cold wind blows through and sends both Jane and Tom into a shivering fit, unable to stop even for a split second. it is so cold, that it is nearly painful even to be standing still.

By this point, the rain has let up some, and the lightning is not as frequent. While this is slightly reassuring, this also means that the building is pitch black, save for the tiny stove in the kitchen. Eventually, Ed's nose twitches as a strange smell. He can't quite place it at first, until he takes a bigger sniff of the air and gets a little lightheaded. And then his heart drops like an anvil; its gas he smells.

Jane

Her shoulders curl inwards and her back rounds up as she tries to chase the uncontrolables chills that run through her body.

"I really need to get out of these wet clothes before I pass out. Where is the washroom in this place?"

Tom

Skunk answers Tom with what he thinks they should do, and then starts talking about working with poker or something. Tom hadn't been listening too well to the last part, his attention was fully directed at the old clock he had just noticed. Strange lookin' thing he thinks to himself, wonder how old it is.. Just as he was about to go over to it a freezing wind struck him. His whole body shakes and quivers to accompy the chattering sound made by his teeth. Too stubborn to let a bit of weather stop him, Tom begins to make his way over to the clock, shivering and shaking all the way there.

Edward

That smell, it's almost seems like.....but the stove burners are on so that doesn't make any sense unless somewhere in this room there's a..."Gas leak!" Ed suddenly cries out, though in his state it sounds like barely more than a slightly raised voice. Turning around to face the stove he starts backing away as quickly as he can manage toward the door "I can smell a gas leak in this room, we gotta get out of here now before it reaches that stove."

Skunk begins to tell Jane where the bathroom is, if its tininess actually qualifies it as one, but his first word is knocked out of his mouth as Ed screams, "Gas leak!"

That was more than enough to trigger Skunk's flight response. A fleeting image of his parent's fire-gutted home passed before his mostly darkness-blinded eyes. A feeble afterthought wondering if maybe that's what had happened there....

"Everybody out the back door!" Then he remembered the others, including the injured Jack-Jeff. "****! We have to get the other guys or they'll be toast!"

In response to his own words he grabs up the shotgun he'd set down on the counter and bolts toward the inner door, using pure mind's-eye memory to find it, and runs square into Tom. Had he taken a moment to remember where people had been shuffling to, he would have avoided him, but in the darkness and the panic Tom's left with an imprint of Skunk's face on his shoulder. Skunk, unfortunately, now know's what Tom's dirty shirt tastes like.

Tom

One of Tom's large, meaty hands was reaching out to touch the clock, un-controlable shivers shaking the arm it was attached to as it made its way to the ticking distraction. Just as he was about to touch the clock-face, a shout from Ed behind him made its way into his thick skull. Gas leak?... Gas!!

Running out the back door was a great idea to Tom, but Skunk's following words sent a chill down Tom's spine colder than any of the wind which had just blew through him. Tom couldn't leave Jack in there, but to leave Jeff there helplessly? The thought would never have crossed his mind.

Tom was just turning to barrel into the other room when Skunk slammed into his shoulder. Knocking him a little off balance, Tom grunts and lets out a low grumble as he sprints as quickly as he can to the room that Jeff is in.

Something in Jack's head snaps him out of his reverie... something deeper, older than anything human.. the part of his brain that kept him alive in the darkness and the heat of the jungles.. when everything was black, the Beast could smell *THEM* in the darkness.. and it smells something now.. the white-hot death smell of gas..Jack shakes his head, and stoops down, trying to carry the wounded Jeff to safety

Jane

Jane looks at Ed.

"Gas!? Let's go. Need help moving?"

She steps towards him and swiftly positions herself so that he can lean on her if need be.

"We should turn off the burners..."

She marks in her mind's eye the direction for the door and starts turning off the burners.

Having run into Tom near the inner doors, Skunk figures he must be heading into the main room to deal with Jack-Jeff. So instead of wasting time stumbling around in there along with him, he chooses to head to the back door. That was near enough and he remembered where it was.

"Gonna open the back door here...help disperse the gas."

Rushing to the back door, he yells out loudly enough for those in the other room to hear, "Got the door open, come on ASAP!" He hadn't actually gotten the door open yet, but so far, it hadn't presented a problem.

As the chaos ensues, Jeff finds himself helplessly unconscious over Jack's shoulder, while Tom darts into the room to find the two. He can see in the faint lightning that Jack has Jeff over his shoulder, but also there is a savagery upon his face that Tom is oddly familiar with. He's seen that look in the ring; that look of terrible and absolute determination to win. Its right about now that Tom sees the limp body of the teenager from the bus still leaned against a wall near the door. He has yet to move the entire time they've been here.

In the kitchen, Ed slowly backs away, to give Jane enough room to fumble with the stove knobs. However, as she jerks the knobs around, she realizes that it probably isn't the greatest of ideas to be next to a gas leak. Skunk slams into the door, making it fly open and crash into the other side of the building with a loud CRUNCH and metal pang. it is enough to get everyone's attention. He yells out for eveyone to follow him, though he wonders if anyone can hear him over the panic.

Jane curses under her breath. "Let's go."

She waits for Ed to lean on her and then starts moving towards Skunk's voice and hopefully the exit.

Tom

Tom charged into the main room, stopped in his tracks only by the all too familiar look on Jack's face, and the fact that Jeff is slung over his shoulder. The thought of confronting Jack crossed through Tom's mind, but he figured that it would only make things worse. Besides, the look on Jack's face could be sheer determination to save Jeff. Either way, Tom had to help the other kid, the one they had all seemed to have forgotten about. Grunting as he picks up the kid and slings him over his shoulder, Tom motions to Jack that it would probably be wise to get the hell out of there. "C'mon!" he says as he heads back over to the door.

Edward

Edward gratefully grabs onto Jane's shoulder and starts moving off towards the the stange mans voice and hopefully an exit out of the builing judging from the crunching sound he just heard, grateful for the darkness that hid the relief and gratitude obviously etched onto his face. It's just one thing after another tonight, gods I just hope it doesn't end as badly as it started, please let all of this just be some lot of freakish coincedences.

Both hands grip the edge of the outer door, knuckles approaching white. The door wasn't fighting back, which in some other circumstance might be a ridiculous concept, but Skunk's unconscious mind seemed to think he needed to have the best hold possible on it, just in case. Perhaps it was just that he feared the possibility of leaving the others inside, thus almost assuring their inevitable firey deaths to a gas explosion. He'd been there, done that, after a fashion.

If the door wasn't going to stay open until everyone was out, he'd be using digitless stumps from here on out, 'cause he wasn't letting go.

The rain, lighter than before, but still relatively heavy, drenched him again as he waited. He could just hear the voices inside, but he wondered what was taking so long. Already, his semi-limp mohawk that had been de-boned by rain earlier that night, was again a pitiful excuse for itself, pretty much left plastered on his otherwise bald head.

"Hey! Come on! Let's go, let's go, let's go!" he yelled against the rain, a tiny bit of his military schooling creeping in at the end. He'd done drills like this before, emergency evac. Not for gas leaks, but for other things that would leave people just as dead if it wasn't handled the right way or quickly enough. Tonight, the right way was any way.

"Let's go!"

Jack

*Jack growls as he moves out of the building, the cool night air hitting his face.. looking around, he feels the red mist lift from his eyes.. setting the younger man down as gently as possible as he watches the building for the others.. the hair on the back of his neck still standing on end*

The air coming in from outside is what guides Jane's steps in the end. She leads Ed to the relative safety of the outside...

Her shivering intensifies as the cold wind swirls around her in earnest.

The sluggish pace of certain others, who, for all he knows, have prayed to be blown to bits and have their bits crisped like so many corn chips, puts a sharper edge to his voice, "COME ON! GET YER ASSES MOVIN'! THIS AIN'T A SIMULATION!"

Jane cringes as she is nearly deafened by Skunk's yells.

She guides Ed a bit further into the alley in a bid to protect their eardrums from further aggression.

Tom

The light at the end of the tunnel for Tom was Skunk's yells coming from outside. Jack had already raced off ahead of him, carrying Jeff with him, and Tom was miserably far behind and starting to get lost. The yells from outside echoed through the building. Guess thats the way... Tom thinks to himself as he stumbles off towards the sound, and soon afterwards stumbled outside.

*After setting the young man down, making sure he's all right, Jack walks over and pats Tom on the back*

You all right there, big fella?

Counting quickly in his head, Skunk thinks Tom's exit accounts for everyone. He didn't even know there was another unconscious...or maybe dead...person inside until he'd been pulled outside by one of the others.

When he sees both the unconscious boy and Jeff laid out on the ground nearby, he can't believe his eyes.

"What are you doing!? Jeez! You can't just drop 'em there, if this place blows, ten feet ain't gonna save them or you!" Skunk screeches in frustration.

He let's loose the door, letting it swing or shut based on the whims of the rain-driven wind, then moves to grab the shoulders of the unconscious boy who was the nearest of the two.

"Let's get these guys outta here, keep going until we get some cover or a helluva distance!"

I'm not aware of the layout outside the building. If there's a retaining wall or some other wall that borders the back lot, one that we can swing around behind, then that's where I'll suggest...yell, scream, whatever, we head to. I'll amend the post as needed.

Ok, ok...get a grip Jane. Follow these people and think of something else so that you don't panic.

That poem you had to read in front of the class the other day! How did it go again?... Oh yeah...

Jane mindlessly recites the classic poem in her head, she does not concentrate on the words but on the cadence of the text. She follows the others silently and helps Ed if he still needs a stable shoulder but her mind is kept otherwise occupied.

"Yeah, i'm allright" is Tom's answer to Jack, "as right as ya can be in a situation like this..." He was opening his mouth to say more when he heard more shouts originating from Skunk. Tom didn't remember setting the kid down, but he must have, as Skunk was already dragging him away and was closely followed by Jack who had the sense to pick Jeff up again. Sighing to himself, Tom follows the others as they set off. Although where they were going, that he was not sure of.

In the mass panic caused by the smell of something that brings so much warmth and life with it, the temporary residents of the local American Legion building find themselves delving out into the lightened rain. The wind chafes at their lips and eyes, threatening to blind them for a moment. There is that ebbing feeling at the back of everyone's mind, wondering if the building will explode or if they're all just worrying too much.

Skunk's militant screaming forces everyone to take a much more organized path, as he looks for some sort of retaining wall. Unfortunately, the building opens directly to the street, with the only thing between them and the possibility for death being an old dumpster. Jack has done this before, many times... dragging a downed teammate was enough to bring all of his previous life to the forefront. His mind was stuck in overdrive, and it took everything in him not to rip the command from the kid with the floppy mohawk.

Both Jack's eyes and Skunk's look for a possible place to hide. The only things near them is a Low Bob's discount tobacco shop across the sidestreet, and a row of shops across the main street out front. The parking lot is about fifty or so feet from the side street and twenty or more from the front. Behind the building, opposite the main street, is residential housing for as far as can be seen in such bad lighting.

Thus far, the best idea has been to continue moving away from the building, no matter what. Jane begins to play a tune over and over in her mind, trying to block out the immense shivering and dread feeling of doom. Tom hauls the teenaged punker over his shoulder, worrying only about saving as many lives as possible. Due to the bone biting wind, however, his legs are having a hard time moving as fast as everyone else, especially as he maintains balance with a teen over his shoulder. Ed's hair stands on end as he takes one quick look back towards the building, hearing the metal door click shut. Its as if a timer were being set... some sort of cosmic countdown.

The fleeting seconds pass by as you all dart across the slick pavement, conclusions being jumped to, and reformed all in the same instant. As the wonder sets in of whether it will blow or not, there is a sudden crackle heard in the back of all your minds, followed by a huge shockwave powerful enough to send even the biggest man to the ground. Skunk's growling out of orders is lost within a moment of complete silence. Not even the rain can be heard tapping against the cold cement. Instantly, it seems, the familiar cracking of wood and brick is heard as gouts of flame screech out of the building's sides and roof, as if an entity has just gained its freedom from a life of bondage.

An expulsion of debris is sent forth after the initial reaction, sending bits of mortar, wood and melted plastic all over the lot of you. It is unnaturally hot and leaves a welt on whatever skin it may come into contact with. Fortunately, you are all far enough away that the large pieces do not fall on you. As the deep red flames engulf the building, the wall facing you essentially disintegrates into ash and debris, spewing a wall of heat that almost sends the lot of you cowering in pain. To Tom and Jane, it is a welcome relief as the shivers are instantly, and curiously, relieved.

And within the span of a few seconds, the explosion is over, though pieces of the building are still breaking off and falling into the flames. As you all look back, you can see the flames seem...off. They are too red for normal fire, and are tinged dark, sometimes black. Jack has seen this kind of fire before; Hellfire some call it. It burns unnaturally hot, but lasts much longer than it should. The tendrils curl and spiral around, almost forming a demonic grin at times. Black plumes of smoke crawl into the air, accompanied by the hiss of water upon the scene, as the rain delves into the depths.

Tom

Trudging quite a way behind the rest of the group, Tom smiled to himself as he walked along. Ya did it Tom, ya really did. It's all over now, all back to normal. Just gotta get away from the about-to-plode buildin' back there and we can get back to normal life. Might even make that fight, wonder what time it is... Tom's rather optimistic thoughts were cut off abruptly by the inconsiderate explosion behind him. The crackling sound made Tom lift his head, he knew something was about to happen, just didn't know what. The following shockwave took away any suspicion to what it could be however. Tom wasn't ready for it, so his hasty attempt to balance himself failed. Spreading his feet against the floor to try and resist the force, Tom instead was completely knocked over by it. It seemed strange to Tom afterwards, but it felt like the impact hit him in the chest first. The force slammed into his chest and he began to crumple over, his legs threw out from under him as he sailed backwards in the air. The weight of the teenager over his shoulder helped to hasten his descent back to the ground. Luckily Tom hit the ground first, the arch of his back slamming into the ground, shortly followed by the rest of his body. His body was followed by the kid whos head managed to knock the wind out of Tom. He rolled the kid off from on top of him before lying on the floor groaning, his already aching muscles aching even more. Knowing that the worst was probably yet to come, Tom tried to get his arms over his face to protect it from the showering walls of debris he could see flying from the building. Luckily none of the pieces managed to reach them, the heat backing it up however did. Eradicating the chills from his body, Tom could do little more than laugh at the irony. Anyone close by could hear him say, inbetween the booming laugh and spluttering cough, "We may be bout dead, eh? But least we all warm.."

In the confusion of the explosion, no one notices Jeff twitching. Apparently whatever nightmare visited him before has returned, and although he is protected from the blast of the explosion by the dumpster, nothing protects him from the demons in his own mind...
