Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
well, hi everybody. Um, not really sure how to go about this, so I'll be blunt.
I kinda want to play my persona - Half-Dragon Fighter or Warblade. after taking a look at the different places, Nexus is probably the one to go with, but I'm not sure how to integrate myselfIf You need me to post somewhere, drop me a message, please

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Welcome. You'll want to start here, http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183599, and introduce yourself. On that page is a link to the character registry, but you don't need to enter your character there immediately.
And here's some good info.
Maybe you'll run into Kirk, the drow you're drawing for me.

What RPGs said - and I'll add that Trog's Tavern is always a great place to get the feel for a new character.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Not quite. While this statement is technically true, it's also misleading. The range of characters who are allowed in the Nexus is certainly vast, but ironically that variety can also be the exact opposite of what a new player wants.
For instance, say a new player comes here and says 'I want to play in a setting with medieval knights'. Naturally they get pointed to the Nexus, because it does indeed allow medieval knights. Unfortunately for the newbie, it also allows killer cyborgs, multidimensional liquid beasts and hyper-intelligent shades of the colour blue. Now, this is fine if playing a knight was really the only thing they cared about; If, on the other hand, their intent was to find a setting containing only medieval characters, then they're going to be sorely disappointed.
What a person says and what they mean can often be miles apart. When trying to interpret their wishes, perhaps we shouldn't be so quick to assume that an all-inclusive setting would be the best choice. The quasi-medieval alternate history setting further down the list might not use quite the same sort of armoured warriors that the player originally had in mind, but in the end it might well be the better option for them.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Yes, I am of the type that the other characters don't matter as much, since I can fit my character snugly into any world that will accept them. The Nexus is perfect, as would be a stadard DnD game

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Would anyone be interested in an alternate history FFRP?
The setting: The year is 1948 and the place, the USA. World War 2 and the Great Depression have been going on for much longer than they should have. Nikola Tesla is still alive and inventing, and several firearms contractors have bought his designs for electricity, particle energy, and kinetic energy based weapons. The alcohol prohibition is still going strong and supporting a seedy, crime-ridden underworld. Semi-sentient (?) robots have been invented, but are treated horribly by many people and have many restrictions placed on them.
There would be some minor rules on combat, and players would probably be some sort of Chicago gangster era gangsters or investigators of some sort.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Hmm. Would the story be played straight, or would it be an anachronism-ridden over-the-top, rollicking adventure? Or both?

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Sort of a mix. Players would be allowed to follow their own storylines and do what they wanted, but a lot of it would circle around the avoiding of the FBI and the catching of the speakeasy runners and other criminals. And it will fit the era, with just a few technological advances it that didn't happen but could have. Such Tesla's weapon designs, cars that used magnets to reduce friction or even hover, those WW2 radio packs would have become those early 'suitcase' cell phones, and of course, the robots.
Combat would require some dice rolls, if only to keep it from falling into the hours of dodging and then striking with things that 'should kill instantly' all combat seems to become in FFRP. Players would actually level up in combat.Last edited by TechnoScrabble; 2011-01-28 at 10:17 PM.

I'm a fan of this idea. Also, I believe the dice rollers work everywhere.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
I was thinking the combat system would work a bit like the Warhammer 40k system.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Players would roll to see if they hit, then the other would roll to see if they dodged or if their cover or armor absorbed it or whatever, and that would decide if you got wounded or not.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
I see. So sorta basic. Cool. However, this would probably go under play by post. I don't know, someone else would be a better authority, but you know, just something to think about.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
The dice rollers do not work in this subforum. Presumably because it's ffrp and it's assumed that we won't be using dice. Unless they've changed it lately.
[roll]1d6[/roll]
Edit: Nope. Still don't work. And yes, any game using a system for combat rolls would go in play by post, I believe.Last edited by happyturtle; 2011-01-29 at 06:38 PM.

Are the rolls just for combat, or will we do skill checks and such?

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
It's gonna go in ongoing games. It'll be like LoC, an FFRP with just a few rules concerning one area to avoid dodge wars.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Very informative thread, twas a most enjoyable read. Hell, was great to learn that godmodding is more than just "I do this and this happens to you". I know I'll be taking that info away with me and figuring out how to apply it to me msn rping.
As for joining a FFRP, I was thinking (due to the sheer insanity, and nudgings from a friend of mine) I may just have to walk into the the Nexus. Thinking being the key word. (Wait... If I'm walking into the Nexus... Am I thinking? Maybe I should skip into the Nexus, or stroll even...)

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
That depends on which RP you're looking to join. In general, the standard procedure is to post your character sheet in the corresponding OOC thread and wait for comments. The first post of that thread will usually contain setting-specific guidelines to help with this, along with any other rules that are relevant to the RP. If you run into trouble with this or anything else FFRP related, don't hesitate to ask.

Re: FFRP Central: All players start here!
Have we ever had a 'Battle Royale'-type game in these forums? We should.
