Re: Old Ways IC
Aside (to whichever local adventurer is closest) Talsarios whispers, "Are we ready to share watches in our hard-won keep with these self-declared armed vagabond mercenaries?"

Re: Old Ways IC
"Nobly done, sir, you have my thanks. I have been pursuing this axe for a day and more. Lord Bost may be willing to hire on more men-at-arms, his demesne lies not far beyond the ruined keep, which is now garrisoned with his men. Tell me, did you come upon the goblins unawares or did you sight one another at a distance? I ask because the wretches were carting treasure with them and may have hidden it along the trail. Of course, we would be willing to share such wealth with you and your men, having happily finished the work we started."

Re: Old Ways IC
Ash nods as Nathros concludes a proper representation of the party's interests to the men, "In this wilderness, we are the hand of Bost. If it suits you, we'd like to tie up the loose ends here. Then I'd be glad to have you and your men share a fire under the protection of the keep. There is one matter left to attend to upon our return. After that, we may get settled for night."

Re: Old Ways IC
"We heard them a ways off and set upon them when it was clear what they were. They were bigger and more fearless than we'd expected, earning us some wounds.
They were wealthy blighters, but we didn't see them bearing any great treasure. It's a ways back on horseback, but we can take you to see what's left of them, if you like."Last edited by Roland St. Jude; 2012-01-21 at 08:03 PM.

Re: Old Ways IC
"Perhaps it'd be wise to just send one of each of our men on horseback, if you could spare a horse, thus saving time and energy for the rest of us. The rest should continue back with us at an easy pace while the two sent can catch up later.
"If you've not already dressed the wounds on your injured, perhaps Stefan and I could see what we might do to offer comfort to them before we set out." She tips her head toward Stefan upon mentioning his name. "A good night's rest by the fire should do them well though."
"- and you may call me Ash. By what name might I call you?" She directs her helmet toward the horse rider who speaks for the rest.

Brandon Bor
Brandon's eyes widen a little and he shakes his head subtly at Ash.
"I'd rather go as an entire group, Ash. There could be more goblins about. More than two scouts could handle."

"I'd rather you just take our word on it, actually, but we will take one or all of you to see for yourself, but let's be about it. The I doubt we've enough daylight to walk out there and back, though I'd think few things would challenge such a large and well-armed group."
To Ash, he adds, "We've tended our wounds as best we can, but certainly a healer may be able to do better. We'd appreciate the aid.
I'm Milos."

Re: Old Ways IC
Mycah finally steps forward and speaks. "They already have shown us proof of the goblins demise by way of the axe Nathros has reclaimed. I see no reason to waste more time just to see their corpses now. It may be best to return to the keep while we still have enough daylight to travel by and then we can plan our next move."

"Hmm, now I don't know the story behind this axe, Nathros," says Talsarios to the dwarf with a thoughtful look. "You can be sure that it was most likely looted from the goblins we were fighting these last few days, can you?"

Re: Old Ways IC
Ash's helm turned slowly to face Brandon's objection, then she tipped her head slightly to the side as he spoke to her. She listened, but her body language showed she was sort of amused as well as unimpressed, even beneath all her steel.
When Mycah speaks, she turns a nod to him in recognition of a wise observation. She listens as her new comrades come to reason one by one.
As Nathros examines his axe, she will approach the rider Milos while taking off her helmet. She has a little bit of "helmet hair", but she looks fairly composed of expression, and there an air of nobility about her upon reaching Milos and making eye contact. She offers her right hand to shake his while her left arm still wraps around her helmet. "Pleasure to meet you, Milos. I'm sure the rest of us might become better acquainted along the rest of the journey."
I don't know much etiquette among the high class noble-folk, but I can handle a fellow man at arms. She smiles a little with the right side of her lips as she thinks to herself and nods assuredly at Milos while reclaiming her hand.
Then she adds, "Might I have a look at them before we set out then, the injured? Which are they?" She gives Stefan a glance and jerks her head for him to follow.

Alastor shrugs. "Come on then, chaps. Let's be off while the sun's still up. Bost's men will be through that old door soon, and we don't want them to get all the glory, eh?"
With that, he picks up his pack and pats Brandon on the shoulder. "No need to go chasing after dead goblins, is there?" he says to the world in general. "Nathros's axe is proof enough."

"Sure, I'll see to your wounded when we get back to the keep. It's no use re-patching you up out here. You'll all make it, won't you?" Stefan winks with a grin.
"So, did those goblins happen to have any wealth on them? You know, besides The Axe of Nathros."
Stefan follows along, unconcerned of danger now that the party's number has grown. He tucks his sling into his belt.

Re: Old Ways IC
"I'll hang back and watch our rear. It seems unlikely anything risked following a group this size, but better to be safe," Mycah tells the others as plans are being made.
As the enlarged party begins to move back towards the keep, he steps back off the trail and out of the way of the horsemen. As each rides by, he nods but doesn't speak - still unsure of the mercenary force. He'll wait back into the trees until they are perhaps 300 yards down the trail, listening for signs of anyone following, then step back out into the trail and trail the party back to the keep.

Re: Old Ways IC
"Oh, plenty wealthy, yes. No ordinary goblins were they? Or are the goblins of the wood normally so big, wealthy, and accustomed to daylight?"
Stefan can spot which riders are wounded as they move to the middle of the group. Two have torn pant legs and wrapped wounds, and another holds one arm in a way that suggests some kind of shoulder or rib injury, though he seems less bloodied than the other two. While he was only joking, they do seem likely to live.
Mycah notes that the goblin trail seems to have been overridden by the horsemen. They must have at least one good tracker to have followed the goblin trail back this way. No sign or sound of trouble can be found. Even the woodland creatures seem to be giving the group a wide berth.
At the vanguard, Ash notices much the same, the large group seems to be scaring off even the local fauna in the distance.
Nathros converses with a couple of the riders, Traldaran villagers from the hill country to the east. They've traveled a fair bit, gaining and losing members, but most of them have been together for years. They hire out as hunters, messengers, guards, and even laborers. The job is dull but sometimes quite dangerous. They've never left hill country before, but they've recently gotten tired of the usual and are out seeking more interesting and profitable adventure. Legends of the western hill tribes tell of a great lord in a stone castle within these woods, and they'd even found a map, so that's where they were headed for starters.

Re: Old Ways IC
Ash looks to be not at all interested in the treasure the goblins had carried. If asked, she would say, "Their disbatchment is reward enough."
She doesn't seem too concerned of an attack from behind, where the riders are, but she does keep an eye out for a freshwater source if they might pass any near by for the horses and men to satisfy their thirsts. If there are none, then she most likely has little to say as the group presses on to the keep.

Re: Old Ways IC
As Mycah moves along the trail and senses the forest returning to normal, he begins to pick up his pace and close the distance to the horsemen. He'll still trail behind, listening to the conversation of the men and trying to determine if the tale they've told seems true.

Brandon Bor
Brandon nods to Alastor's comment about Nathros' axe being proof enough, but his nod seems absent-minded.
He winces when Stefan mentions the goblins' gold, and his hand tightens on his sword, but he relaxes when Milos and his men don't seem to react badly.
He still says nothing and just watches Milos and his men, as well as his surroundings.

Re: Old Ways IC
The path back to the keep is dry, despite Ash's keen eyes, the first freshwater the group comes to is the river around the keep.
The riders seem honest and open about their recent travels but ask also for some information about the group in return.
Guardsmen walk the keep's outer wall and can be spotted as the group approaches.

Re: Old Ways IC
When the riders ask about their group, Ash will gladly tell Milos how there were two groups sent by the Lord Bost to secure this keep from the Goblins who had set roots here. "I lead the second group here along with Mycah, after the others cleared the main threats. Our job was to occupy rather than dispatch. I believe there were no prisoners, and no point to them at that. By the time we'd arrived, there were only a few left and the ones we followed until we found you fellows. Caught some stragglers, but their supposed King would have been among the ones you all were fortunate enough to run into." She throws him a wink behind her visor slit.
"I believe the rest of this group was quite interested to see what reward they might find for their troubles upon catching the last of them. I know your victory was fair and true, but perhaps we might negotiate over the spoils in exchange for our efforts escorting you and your men through these unfamiliar lands, if you are interested. I care not of the spoils for myself, only for the interests of the men and my lord."
About then, she sees the guardsmen and says, "I'll let you consider over the evening. For now, please find comfort in the shelter these men bravely won on behalf of our lord. I'm sure he'd be pleased to know of fellows like yourselves and help you find a place in these parts if you're interested."
Then she hails the guardsmen on the wall as she sees them watching the group approach. She'll remove her helmet showing there's no need for concern. "These are riders from the East. A village called Helmond. They are the Goblin King-slayers, " she smirks at her own words. "Let them be welcome to our fires as allies for the night." With that, she gives Milos and the others a nod and makes her way to the drawbridge.
"Are Devin and Jeanne about? I'd like to meet with them."Last edited by Nevaera; 2012-01-30 at 08:55 AM.

Brandon Bor
Brandon relaxes all the way once the keep is in line of sight. If Milos and his friends were bandits or goblin allies, they had passed up the best opportunity to betray them.
"We took out about two dozen gobbos or so, before Ash and Mycah arrived. Maybe three dozen. I can't remember anymore how many. Plus a couple very stupid hired bugbears."
"The fighting was very bad. Nerve-wracking. We lost Talsarios' friend"
He pauses a moment, then adds.
"I'm Brandon Bor, by the way. Youngest son of Boris Bor."
Brandon goes silent again. He broods.

Re: Old Ways IC
"Oh, I lost more than one in my encounter with these nasty goblinoids, though he was only one I could call my friend," Talsarios murmurs softly to himself, yet heedless of who might hear. "I brought my team of bearers and a few hired guards here, in search of the damned goblins ... I brought them all to their horrible deaths..."
Looking up at the keep, he grasps the hilt of the sword of Gregoras at his side, and says with a strong and cheery voice, "Well, fellows - now we've given these woodsmen time to break it, let's see what deeds lie beyond the stout door within! We've got a keep to finish plundering!"

Though he looks a little abashed that his internal monologue was aloud, Talsarios shakes his head at Brandon's comment. "Not stubborn, really: pinned down and surrounded, with nowhere to run. When you folk appeared, we took our chance to get some vengeance..."

Re: Old Ways IC
The guardsman nod at Ash's instruction and wave the riders inside the outer walls. For now, they gather in the near the keep wall, but before long, they can be found encamped in one of the guardrooms inside the keep.
No sign of the workers in the courtyard or Jeanne for that matter. A large crowd has gathered, many of them wielding weapons, have gathered in to main room. They stand watch before the now open doorway.
Devin greets the group, "Good timing. I've put them all on watch, but so far nothing has stirred from above. Good thing, too. We brought few with any fighting experience."
