Grimmgang's powerful strike sets the squid's body swaying, but creates more of a dent than an injury. Drasil has better luck, tearing through more of the leathery skin keeping the creature in one piece. As the others pause to heal their wounds, the zombified hulk recovers from the blow, attempting to sweep its wooden nemesis aside.

The tentacle impacted on the wooden body with a loud crack, but the body held together, and Drasil retaliated without hesitation. Grimmgang switched back to a more accurate and less wide swing, aiming for one of the prior wounds to continue his attempt at splitting the zombie in half.

The giant squid shudders, creaks, and slowly tears itself almost in two as the accumulated damage proves too much for its long-dead form to bear. Finally, with a rain of alchemical preserving fluid and less pleasant substances, its body gives way, the magic sustaining it unable to compensate for the lack of connecting tissue.

Even as its tentacles slump to the floor, a crash from the north heralds the collapse of something structurally significant, and flames are beginning to creep past the western door. The temperature in the room has continued to rise, and now you can easily feel it even through Xaxhan's frost-song; it will likely be a minute, perhaps half, before it reaches dangerous levels.

Xaxhan dashes to retrieve his mandolin from its position on the floor, his temporary troglodytic scales secreting some sort of sebaceous substance apparently designed for temperature regulation. It was strange to experience environmental extremes as another species. I should have bought that trinket Iriel had tried to entice me with, he mused as he went over to rifle through the priestess' belongings.

"I'm still a bit battered. If anyone of you might be willing to mend my wounds, I'd be terribly appreciative. It's hard enough to sing through teeth like these, let alone when you're coughing up blood." He glanced around the room, looking for anything portable and valuable.

The wooden door, while beginning to warp, is unlocked, and a few seconds of effort suffices to wrench it open, revealing a darkened corridor leading to what is presumably the building's overhanging eastern wing. Daiya can tell that Dura's dagger, breastplate and a small black gem in a pocket hanging from her belt are magical, and a quick inspection from Xaxhan reveals that her boots are of red dragonhide, although she seems to have carried no coin. Shard's ministrations take some time to apply, and the heat in the room continues to rise as the flames eagerly consume Vorgaard's fine carpets; remaining longer would likely be unwise.

Retreating into the eastern corridor and closing the door would give you another minute, at least, if you need it.

After giving your wounds a chance to heal, you make your way along the lushly carpeted corridor, Shard's glow illuminating brass reliefs of legendary scenes and a few unlit hanging lanterns. As you reach the halfway point, the loud whumph of a large and stubborn fuel source being suddenly ignited resounds throughout the hall; apparently alchemical preservatives are quite the friend to fire when sufficiently provoked. The other end of the corridor leads to a half-opened door, on the other side of which is the promised library.

The chamber is as spacious as one would expect of a collector of history, row upon row of oaken shelves sagging under the weight of hundreds of heavy leather-bound tomes. Stained-glass windows line the walls looking out over the water, wreathed by continual flames in appropriate colours and depicting nobles and kings in various styles of finery. Three soldiers in garishly-painted armour - each apparently attempting to outdo the other in the bloody designs of their personal standards - stand among the shelves, and a slender woman in blackened chain, her head shaved aside from a central topknot, turns to face you from the back of the room, tucking a small book into her pocket.

"Oh, sacrifices. Is that Dura you're carrying? How cute. No, no, you're right, we shouldn't be standing around here when the house is on fire. We just thought we'd keep her waiting a bit, you know, and it's a very nice library..."

"Perhaps it will be a nice grave as well. Thanks for the fire by the way, made handling those ogre mages so much easier." That was a lie as they used the coals from the braziers to depose of them, but making an Emerald Claw feel stupid was worth it, and perhaps it would anger him into a careless action.

Grimmgang's rapid assault catches the burly cultist unawares, and he bounces against the bookshelf before falling under a pile of dislodged histories. Shard is at first incapable of causing the shelf to do more than sway unsteadily, but as Daiya adds her efforts, it topples over, knocking against the one behind and turning the southern end of the room into a mountain of damaged reading material, with one unfortunate soul buried in the middle.

The woman at the back pouts, grasping the handle of a metal girdle about her waist and snapping it outward to reveal three long, flexible metal strands. "You killed the Krulaks? Who are we supposed to get to row the boat now, you?" As she flicks the edge of the weapon toward you, it seems to extend to an impossible length before one realizes that only a shadow of the metal is stretching across the room; it soon proves substantial enough, however, attempting to wrap around Grimmgang's neck. Yanking the shadow tight, the woman dances up the side of the bookshelf, balancing on the spines of poorly-shelved books as easily as solid ground and coming to a rest atop the shelf. Taking advantage of her attack to fade into the shadows, the third cultist brandishes a greatsword as he advances on Grimmgang, abruptly reversing the direction of his strike while the afterimage keeps swinging. A muffled string of curses heralds the survival of the buried man as books and shelves alike are furiously shoved aside, although he doesn't emerge from the pile of wood and parchment quite yet.

"You killed the Krulaks? Who are we supposed to get to row the boat now, you?" The toothy grin spreading over Grimmgang's face is almost unnaturally wide, more akin to a grimace of pain if not for the gleam of malevolent joy in his eyes. Perhaps it did succeed in irritating his assailants, for he only needed to casually lean sideways to avoid both the sword and the strand wreathed from shadow.
Rounding on the nearer man, he came in low and thrust his sword upward, aimed straight at the heart through the stomach.

A scream of intense pain transitioned into an outburst of blasphemies so vile they would make a sailor's wife gasp. Grimmgang quickly touched the moonstones on his belt and when the fire faded he just stood there, staring at Ethras with eyes that promised pain and suffering. The left half of his beard was heavily reduced, and the eyebrow gone completely, the sickening smell of burned hair and flesh filling the air. Blisters and boils covered much of his skin, but as divine energy flowed into him they moved like a swarm of insects, diminishing, mending. His shield hit the ground with a thump, and a gleaming silver mist began enveloping him.

Drasil meanwhile was furious after witnessing the attack and with no way to reach Ethras atop the bookshelf, she instead tried to tear apart the shelf's frame to make it collapse.

Daiya once again grants Ethras an undoubtedly painful set of bruises, but she simply smiles absently as Drasil bites into the wooden shelf, placing one of her feet against the wall and wedging the other behind the bookcase. With a brief burst of dark energy, she shoves the shelf hard, burying Drasil in a cascade of tomes. The shelf itself cracks against the next one in line on its way down, sending the northern stacks into another rolling rain of leather and parchment. The woman herself clings to the wall like some mockery of a spider, surveying her handiwork with the air of a regretful child as smoke begins to leak into the room from behind you.

Drasil takes (4d6)[12] damage, and is pinned until she succeeds on a DC20 Strength or Escape Artist check.

Note that the area covered with books and fallen shelves (anywhere ~20ft in front of a shelf in the direction it fell, so east for the southern and west for the central and northern shelves) counts as difficult terrain.

While Drasil clawed her way out of her tomb of tomes, Grimmgang forced his way through the ruin of the shelf. Abandoning the sword, he reached for bow and arrow and pulled back. Noticing with satisfaction the arrowhead as well was glowing with an icy blue aura, he took careful aim at Ethras and released.

Drawing an arrow to cheek, Daiya fires at her foe, hoping the chill she felt was to her advantage.

The Seren bard advances, drawing a tiny package from within his rucksack as he approaches the upended bookshelf. As he moves forward, his form blurs and reforms atop the bookshelf, closer to their opponent. He hurls the tanglefoot bag at the villain, hoping to restrain her.
