I just don't get why "Evil" needs to be "Out to harm people for kicks". That's just being an an Evil Jerk alignment. You can be evil without necessarily wanting to cause harm to others at all - you would just view it as an unavoidable and necessary outcome to achieving your goals. Sadism on the other hand is just too shallow for my liking.

Lawful Evil isn't necessarily out to harm others, but doesn't have qualms with doing so to achieve their goals.

The goal is corruption, though. And sadism is a very obvious sign of corruption, a way for the fiends to "show their work".

Whenever I play world conquering games, for instance, my goal isn't "CRUSH THEM BENEATH OUR HEEL", it's "Convert them to our cause and rule the world by uniting it. If they won't convert, they are a threat - so throw them into financial chaos by capturing their resources and force them to surrender to us. If you absolutely must, then maybe you could use some of the converts to crush them. Now excuse me while I go sip some coffee evilly."

Of course! After all, I only crush people who fight back, and I'm perfectly willing to accept surrender!

Sometimes, when playing more aggressive games, I get irritated when someone attacks me because I was set to ignore them and carry about my business. The line is usually "Come on! If you hadn't attacked me, you'd have been left alone! Why do you want to die so much? What's that, stop destroying your city? Well, alrighty then, now if you'll excuse me, I was doing something..."

In almost all the DnD games I've ever run, there was a northern ogre named Brograr the Conquerer who was the nicest evil ruler ever. As long as the lands nearby weren't easy to take or nobody attacked his lands, he would leave them alone. And once he had the lands he wanted, he would give the lands he didn't want back.

Hmm... the thought's just struck me... how corrupted is corrupted?
For example, if we were to choose Krystal, how corrupted would she need to be in order for the terms of the wager to be fulfilled. Just making her a anti-hero type, who kills criminals instead of capturing them? Or go a little further and make her a like Rorschach, someone who doesn't really care who she hurts as long as it follows her own twisted worldview and furthers her supposed goal of crimefighting, or do we go the whole hog and turn into Arthas: she's fallen so far that she's lost sight of her original goal completely and is now just doing it because... well... because?
