[3.5 Base Class] The Detective [Work in Progress]
Note: This is still a work in progress, plus I am still pretty new to homebrewing. So, while I am still in the process of fully putting this together, any suggestions for it would of course be appreciated.
The Detective
Spoiler
In this city of mine, its a fine line between light and shadow. A man's got to be tough to walk that sort of tightrope. I guess we'll just have to see if I'm up for the task...
- Spade, Changeling Detective
The Sleuth. The Investigator. The Private Eye. They're all just names, really. Names don't matter. What does matter is action.
And a truly hard boiled detective is just that, a man of action. Looming in the shadows, the detective works just within the realm of law, or even slightly outside of it, but all in the pursuit of justice.
Adventures: Like the Paladin, the Detective works to write wrongs, and punish those deserving of it. However, their methods could not be further apart. A detective is not truly a detective without his (often shady) contacts. Indeed. a detective is often willing and ready to dive right into the seedy underbelly of the criminal world in order to find whatever information he might need to solve his case.
Characteristics: The Detective is not a frontline fighter, prefering to use his wits and charm to work his way out of a situation, and finding some clues in the process.
Alignment: Detectives can run either way on the Lawful or Chaotic spectrum. Some prefer to work with the established legal force, providing and sharing information while he can. Others deeply mistrust the law, and therefor choose to work outside it in order to get the job done.
Outside of this, one may choose to become a detective because they truly wish to help others, or they simply may be in it for the money. However, the work of a detective is concerned with helping others, and few if any are Evil.
Religion: Most detectives have little time for religion, seeing it as little more then a distraction from the case at hand. However, a particularly pious Lawful detective might worship St. Cuthbert, respecting his unrelenting code of conduct, while a Neutral of Chaotic detective might worship a deity such as Boccob, understanding the need for oversight and knowledge.
Background: A detective has usually had a rough life. Perhaps he lived a life of abject poverty. Or maybe his parents were murdered at a young age, and he swore to avenge them. Regardless of the specific circumstances, a detective is often the victim of tragic events which leave him cynical and jaded, but also with a drive to improve.
Races: With their tendency to occupy cities and their natural capacity for adaptability, humans are the most common race to become detectives. Gnomes, what with their natural charms, and Halflings, always on the lookout for clues are also well suited to detective work. Orcs often lack the force of personality for true P.I. work, though some might make up for it through sheer imposing stature and force. Elves are rarely detectives, as many see the grimy sort of work to be beneath them.
Other Classes: How your class relates to other classes, positively or negatively, and why.
Role: The detective is master of social interaction, using natural charm to work up a network of social contracts. When engaged in combat, a detective focuses on battlefield control, using a mix of veiled threats and crippling strikes to weaken his foes and leave them a wreck of their former selves.
Adaptation: How a DM might change your class to fit into their campaign or unique world setting.
