Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Illudai Cave Network
The swarm overall seems immobile, but the individual insects are in a constant state of motion, clicking, clacking, scurrying, flying and gnashing. However, there is a certain peace to their movements; any such gathering of insects would typically result in a feeding frenzy by the predators, but no insect lifts so much as a pincer to harm another. Into this chaos, Amirah extends her senses and her entomological knowledge.
Amirah:
SpoilerWhen Amirah takes a closer look at the insects, she sees a certain dead laissez-faire to their movements atypical of insects. It is somewhat like what her own swarm members undergo when she commands them, but it also seems something more... as if they are more thoroughly dominated.
Additionally, within the swarm, her keen senses for such things detect entire hive networks throughout the sea of life. She follows the dances of bees and ants, and gauges that their Queens have been taken into the swarm as well. One of her members manages to get a visual of one ant Queen; she walks in a dead trance, almost apathetic to the needs of her children. Amirah may have concern and consideration for other hives, but Abdullah clearly has no such reservations.
Amirah focuses some of the keener insects on the large bug that seems to project Abdullah's avatar. She senses within it the same sort of magic that the Queen of her swarm possesses; though killing it would not kill Abdullah, just as the death of Amirah's Queen would not kill her, it is the vessel through which the sorcerer's magic flows. If killed, his hold on this swarm might be lessened, but she can't be certain. Given his comments, Amirah surmises that he has other "avatars" across the continent, and the swarm here would likely rally to one of those rather quickly.
Looking closer at its anatomy, the swarm seems to come to some sort of consensus on what to call the thing. It is the Usurper!Prince, and it has stolen countless Queens. She recognizes breeding apparatus from many insects beneath its abdomen; she guesses that, perhaps, the Usurper!Prince can force any insect female to give birth to more of its kind.Last edited by Shadow_Elf; 2012-12-06 at 02:33 PM.

Amirah, Living Swarm
"Alvah," Amirah says, even thought it is projecting to all her allies, "We see many Queens in the Swarm. All of them are being treated as mere drones. We do not like this. We fear that the other Queens like Us where absorbed and destroyed. There is nothing left of my sister swarms for Us to talk to. We do not like this.
We fear destroying this swarm will not destroy the Creator. Its King is powerful, but the Swarm can survive the death of a Queen - more so the death of a King such as this. Eggs may have been laid elsewhere for such eventuality. If we fight, we may win a battle, but swarms live beyond their individuals."Interested in MitD? The bard take a few seconds to absord the new information then reply,
"Even thought we might only be able to delay him by simple defeat or even loose a fight, I am not sure you should accept his deal. You might want to ask for more details about the 'updrage' he speaks of. He made it sound as if he would get at least partial control over you, which none of us really want."
The bard pause, then add,
"If his explanation satisfy you and you feel you can trust him enough, having him as ally might be a good thing. He might provide information the enemies that are after us. But in any case, we sure will support you."Last edited by Dekkah; 2012-12-07 at 08:24 AM.

Even though she had cautiously counseled in favor of the proposal, Medinah was beginning to have serious misgivings based on what she was hearing. More information was needed, so the warforged lowered (but did not sheath) her weapon to address Amirah's "father" on slightly less hostile terms.
"Amirah will be affected directly by this proposition, but she is also a hunter aboard our ship and therefore partly responsible for its security. That affects my primary function, to ensure the safety of the Captain, and if your intentions toward Amirah will compromise security and directly or indirectly jeopardize the Captain or her interests, it will be my duty to take action. Before I can acquiesce, I will require more information, in particular regarding your stated intentions to alter Amirah in order to monitor her and enforce loyalty."Currently playing: Jathal Darsha'an; Linie

Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Abdullah
A smaller version of the monstrous insect emerges from the swarm. One of Our chimeric insects will accompany the swarm, lending aid in combat and providing a line of communication between the avatar and Us. Through this creature, We will issue Our commands; it will also serve as a magical tracer. Should the avatar disobey Us, the full might of Our swarm will enact appropriate punishment, using the chimera as a rallying point. Gauging the Hunters' reactions as he says this, the sorcerer grins. And do not begin thinking for a moment that you can destroy the creature to break the connection, little one. Our magic can bring the chimera back to life an indefinite number of times. The image crosses its arms and begins to tap its foot. Though your concern for Our creation is admirable, We grow impatient. Accept Our terms, Amirah, or reject them and be consumed alongside your treasured companions. We will accept either outcome, but would prefer not to have to restructure the swarm following such an engagement.Last edited by Shadow_Elf; 2012-12-07 at 01:09 AM.

The half-marid tense a little, having the feeling things will soon turn out to battle and look around formulating some combat plans in his mind. Still he says nothing, letting Amirah take the decision, as it is her own fate that is most at stake.

Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Amirah, Living Swarm
"We are sorry," Amirah sends to her companions. There is sadness and fear in those words. "This may cost you all greatly. Get ready."
Amirah then takes one look at the creature that would take residence in her swarm, and the final push needed to make her decision is felt through the entire mass. As one, the insects buzz an answer. "We do not trust you, Creator. You promise giving us power in exchange for controlling us. We do not want power. We were born of freedom. We could have power if we stayed, but We have found freedom to Our liking. A swarm cannot have two Queens, and your offer breaks the First rule twice: you would force a second Queen on Us, and you would place yourself as a second Queen with Queen!Captain."
"You are also arrogant, thinking yourself more powerful than us. We are your Creation, we are as immortal as you. And you ignore Our friends to your peril."
"We reject you, Creator, and We reject your offer."
Spoiler
I know some of you were angling to have me agree, but this is a Faustian bargain, and it simply does not appeal to Amirah. Sorry, guys.

Abdullah
The sorcerer frowns. Unfortunate. Join your Sister!Queens in oblivion, then. A shame, really... The image fades, and the larger chimera vanishes in a puff of magic. All at once, the swarm leaps into actions; though large portions of the swarm depart, most of it begins to flit and buzz around the Hunters. Amirah picks out smaller microswarms, about as big as hers, constructing out of the chaos into discreet units of like creatures. She notes and transmits the location of a total of eight distinct swarms; two each of some nasty-looking spiders, wasps, scarab beetles and cockroaches. It becomes increasingly difficult to see as the chaos in the room reaches a peak. She also sees a number of immature Usurper!Princes, which serve as rallying points for the swarm.
SpoilerCombat crunch will come with my next post, which might be today but will likely be tomorrow. The entire room is in concealment, but Amirah and your enemies ignore the concealment. Additionally, the ambient swarm will coalesce randomly about the room, providing regions of thicker, and dangerous, swarm density.
Amirah still has issues accruing temporary HP during this encounter. My Homebrew

Amirah, Living Swarm
Unlike most fights, Amirah does not immediately dissolve into a cloud. With most insects around her under the Creator's control, she cannot risk her swarm being overpowered. Instead, her shape remains human, and she uses the precious few seconds before the group is attacked to point out the largest concentrations of insects, as well as the enemy prince bugs, to the rest of the group.Interested in MitD? Drawing his sword, which make a melodious thundering sound as it slide out of his scabbard, and taking his battle stance, the half-marid simply say in a deep and excited voice,

Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Iludai Cave Network
As the swarm leaps into action, the Hunters respond in kind, drawing their implements and weapons while the room falls into chaos around them.
The wasps in the north part of the room are the first to react, rushing Rahman. The swordmagus repels the insects with his swordmage warding. Meanwhile, the cockroaches crawl over the stalagmite to reach a more optimal position before charging Jalil. The sorceress, remaining untouched almost all day, cannot manage to keep their acidic mandibles from her relatively unguarded flesh. The spiders make a beeline for Amirah, and the swarms clash in battle. The spiders, for the time being, appear to come out ahead in the exchange.
Crunch:
SpoilerJalil is crit for 15 acid damage + ongoing 5 acid damage.
Amirah is hit for 29 damage + ongoing 10 poison damage.
Rahman is missed.
It is Kihtsah's turn.
Battle Map
Spoiler
The entire room has concealment because of the ambient buzz of bugs. Amirah ignores this concealment and can see normally. However, any time Amirah tries to gain temporary hit points, she'll be mentally assaulted by Abdullah. The stalagmites grant Superior Cover if your line of effect is drawn through them. The Usurper!Princes are really more of a terrain feature than an enemy; these juveniles are not combat-capable threats, but they do help refine the swarm. One hit will knock them out, and they provide a non-stacking Aura 5 which grants +2 attack and +2 damage to members of the swarm.

Known Information
SpoilerFeel free to roll Nature for monster knowledge results about the various swarms. There's four kinds of swarm (spider, wasp, cockroach, scarab), and you'll need separate nature checks for each. Monster knowledge is a free action, but it has to be trained, I think.
Spiders:
SpoilerNatural beast (spider, swarm). This swarm is weak to area attacks, but resistant to targeted attacks. They are venomous, and the swarm will attack anything that gets too close (aura 1, you take free MBAs for starting turn in that aura). Outrunners from the swarm spread fresh webbing all around the swarm, which is highly sticky (aura also immobilizes, save ends). The swarm will also occasionally emit toxic bursts of gas to subdue its prey, which reach out to 15 feet.
Cockroaches:
SpoilerNatural beast (swarm). They are stinky and vicious, and often make use of hit-and-run tactics. Aura 2 of stench, -2 to attack rolls.
Wasps:
SpoilerNatural beast (swarm). They are ravenous and deadly, but have little regard for personal safety.
Shaqat Beetles:
SpoilerNatural beast (swarm). This swarm will engulf and latch onto a target, eating it alive. Shaking them loose is difficult (escape DC 20). The beetles are capable of jumping ten feet through the air. These creatures are infected with parasites that they can transmit to their prey. These cerebral parasites can take hold in the victim's brain. Does not have the same tendency to reactively lash out as other swarms.Last edited by Shadow_Elf; 2012-12-09 at 09:21 PM.

Alvah's response to the swarm is devastating; with his magic, the Half-Marid manages to completely rearrange the battlefield, placing his allies within Figment's protective illusions while bashing about the swarms on every side.
Aura 1, if you start your turn in it, they get a free attack.
Wasps:

Amirah, Living Swarm
Amirah's humanoid shape shatters as the swarm recoils from the spider attack, leaving hundreds dead behind them and forcing Amirah to quickly draw replacements from Abdullah's insects. With much of their thoughts taken up by fighting for dominance, Amirah's shape reforms somewhat shakily, but still her movements are measured and her magical incantation perfectly intoned as she calls on the winds to further push away the swarm towards the walls.
Figment, in the mean time, starts weaving between the legs of all the warriors, her shape seemingly everywhere at once as she strives to distract the swarm.

Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Iludai Cave Network
The torrent of wind unleashed by Amirah bashes the swarms about, killing off many individual members. Though she manages to overcome the psychic intrusions of Abdullah once again, the spider poison passing along her swarm claims yet more members of the hive.
The nearer cockroach swarm, seemingly unfazed by the high winds, charges right at Amirah, and once again, the two swarms clash ferociously. The cockroaches make little progress with their assault.
Meanwhile, the massive spider swarm passes through Medinah, leaving her covered in webbing, and unleashes an eruption of noxious gas. Medinah and Kihtsah resist the effect, but the rest of the party is overcome by the poisonous fumes emitted by the spiders.
Rahman wraps his Aegis about the cockroaches, though the swarm reacts violently and savages the scholar. Ignoring this, he uses his natural Kobolish shiftiness to slide aside of the swarm. He yanks the pendant from around his neck and tosses it across the chamber into the air above the spot where the usurper!prince Kihtsah chopped once stood. The ruby explodes violently, scorching the surrounding swarms.
The scarabs behind Alvah leaps through the air, landing about the bard in droves. The crawl atop him and begin biting him, holding him in place with sheer mass.
Crunch:
SpoilerCockroaches charge Amirah and miss.
I misread the stablock on the spider swarms, they are, in fact, Large. They are changed to reflect this on the map. The spiders move through Medinah's space into the space indicated on the map; Medinah gets an oppotunity attack. Remember, everything has concealment.
Except for Kihtsah (phew!) and Medinah, everyone takes 22 poison damage and is weakened (save ends). Why WotC thought it was a wise idea to put a weakening condition on a swarm monster, (or on any number of insubstantial creatures) is beyond me, but that's the monster.
Rahman marks C1 and S1. He is crit at the start of his turn by Acid Mandibles. He shifts away. He uses his daily Necklace of Fireballs.
The scarabs jump onto Alvah. He can make an AoO if he wishes (remember, they have concealment). Alvah is grabbed and takes ongoing 10 damage (both until escape, DC20).
It is Jalil's turn.
Battle Map

Jalil
As the wave of spiders threatens to overwhelm her Jalil's eyes flash blue and her body explodes into a dense fog cloud. Lightning flashes within the cloud as it drifts closer to the spider swarm and peals of thunder echo off the roof of the cavern. Sheets of pure lightning roll out of the cloud and crawl over the spiders as if the lightning were it's own living swarm and with a crack of thunder the lightning arcs over to the cockroachs next to Amirah. The fog cloud sails over Kitsah and Alvah's head and more lighting flashes down at the swarms trying to knock them back.
SpoilerI've left the description deliberatly vague as I'm not really sure where the swarms and Jalil will end up by the end of the turn. Here's the plan.
Start of Turn:
Take 5 Ongoing Acid Damage (down to 70/101 HP)
Minor Action: Essence Form (maintain Insubstantial until EONT, gain 13 temp HP if I hit with an Arcane power)
Move Action: Shift to J14.
Standard Action: Static Charge (Spider Swarm is only creature in burst)
Attack vs Reflex (1d20+18)[36]
Damage (1d8+21)[23] lightning and thunder damage and (1d6)[3] lightning and thunder damage and the Spider Swarm is slid to G13 (bottom right corner of swarm is in G13). (1d10)[8] Additional damage from Elemental Escalation.

Damage (1d8+21)[28] lightning and thunder damage and (1d6)[5] lightning and thunder damage and the Cockroach Swarm is slid to I7. (1d10)[10] Additional damage from Elemental Escalation.
Free Action: Fly to G12 via Elemental Escalation
Action Point: Thunder Leap vs Spider Swarm & Alvah (couldn't exclude you, sorry)
Attack vs Fortitude (Spider Swarm) (1d20+18)[19]
Attack vs Fortitude (Alvah) (1d20+18)[38]
Damage (2d6+24)[30] thunder damage and the swarm is slid to G14. Alvah is slid to H11.
Free Action: Jump to square adjacent to Cockroach Swarm 1 but not adjacent to any ally, preferrably on the north side of the swarm. She can jump 12 squares and I'm not sure where the swarm will be.
Thunder Leap Secondary Attack vs Cockroach Swarm
Attack vs Fortitude (1d20+18)[33]
Damage (2d6+18)[26] thunder damage and the cockroach swarm is pushed to J6 and then slid to J5.

Jalil's spells don't go exactly as planned, but she still manages to inflict serious damage to both her target swarms. Unfortunately, she also inflicts a great deal of collateral damage to Alvah.
The scarab swarm charges at Rahman, sending out a portion to lock him down. Rahman's warding is not enough to keep the bugs at bay, and he is quickly pinned like Alvah. Meanwhile, the wasps from across the room surge forward at Jalil, but the sorceress conjures a simple gust of wind to keep them away.

Caught off-guard by the ferocity of the swarms, Medinah finally leaped into action--or rather teleported--though not until she had activated her anima blade and extended her aegis onto the spider swarm that had ensnared her in its webs. Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Iludai Cave Network
Medinah's psychic onslaught places her curse upon several swarms and eradicates insects by the score, the bugs simply dropping out of the air, their tiny brains fried.
Near one of the stalagmites, the swarm condenses into a dangerous opaque cloud of buzzing life. The remaining prince bugs move into positions better suited to command the swarms. The three swarms driven into the cave's far wall surge forward all at once. The wasps attack Jalil, while the cockroaches charge Rahman. The giant spider swarm rushes past the alchemist making a beeline for Kihtsah; though Rahman takes a swipe at them with his sword as they pass, it's not an effective strike. The spiders poison Kihtsah with their savage fangs.
Crunch:
SpoilerJalil takes 14 damage and OG5 Untyped. Rahman takes 14 and OG5 Acid. Kihtsah takes 25 damage and OG10 poison. The pink area on the map blocks line of sight completely, because of how dense the bugs have become there. Luckily, no one was standing in the burst...

Despite the power behind the strike, Kihtsah's attack is not very effective against the spiders. However, as a straw may break a camel's back, so too can a small strike tip the scales in battle, and the spiders seem less coordinated after the attack. However, they do manage a rather coordinated counterattack, further injuring the dervish.

Aura 1, if you start your turn in it, they get a free attack.
Wasps:
SpoilerNatural beast (swarm). They are ravenous and deadly, but have little regard for personal safety. They reactively attack those that stand near them.
Does not have the same tendency to reactively lash out as other swarms. My Homebrew

DM
Alvah take a solid beating, even from friendly fire by Jalil. Still, he smiles and doesnt complain. As Kihtsah is ganged up by the spiders, Alvah weave his magic to offer him some protection.
The swarm on him bite him up a little, but the bard doesnt care too much. Using his magic, he sooth his own wounds, teleporting himself among his friends and summon his racial abilities and his form become watery and a thin mist surrounds him.
Slamming his sword on his shield tree times, aiming for three different enemies and reposition his allies to give them some advantageous position.
SpoilerAlvah take 22 poison damages (55HP left)
Alvah is weaknened (Save ends)
Alvah is grabbed and takes ongoing 10 damage (both until escape, DC20)
Take 26 thunder damages From Jalil... happy he was weakened! (he slid me to H11 too... doesnt seem to be reflection on map)
Use Chord of resilience when Kihtsah is hit to reduce Damage by 11.
Start of turn : Take 10 ongoing damages (reduce by 6 = 4)
Free : Rolling echo repeat attack (Done OOC) :
Attack on S1 : 29 V Fortitude
Attack on R1 : 22 V Fortitude
Attack on C2 : 22 V Fortitude
Hit : [21] thunder damages and push 2 (S1to M12/N13(No push), R2 to F10 (if I can actually push it), C2 to N10)
Minor : Majestic Word on Alvah, spend a surge + (2D6+6)[12] HP and Gain 6 THP and teleport to J10 (Since I telelport I Have +2 AC and Reflex - Cloak)
Move : Healing Rain, spend a surge and Gain an Aura 1 : Grant 6 THP to allies at the start of my turn.
Standard : Drums of the wild hunt, Close burst 2 (up to 3 enemies).
Attack on S2 : (1D20+19)[36] VS Fortitude
Attack on R1 : (1D20+19)[31] VS Fortitude
Attack on W2 : (1D20+19)[28] VS Fortitude
Hit : (1D10+12)[18] thunder damage. You can teleport an ally within 10 squares of you to a square adjacent to the target. If you do, that ally gains a +3 power bonus to its next attack roll against the target before the end of your next turn. (Kihtsah to L14, Rahman to I9 and Medinah to K9 )... the goal here is to isolate Kihtsah so it isnt interesting for the swarms and to move the two aegis of assault used away froim their target(which will hopefully trigger make the monster trigger them.
End of turn : Save Vs Immobilise (1D20)[3]
End of turn : Save Vs Weakened (1D20)[18]

Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Amirah, Living Swarm
Still in her compact humanoid form, Amirah steps away from the fight, behind the protection of the rocks, and starts one of the complex rituals that call forth her friends. Figment takes center stage, distracting the swarms around so she can work. Amirah's chant is very complex, laying extra magics of control to better speak to her summon. A portal opens, and a massive tiger jumps though, tearing into the scarab swarm, batting individual insects and closing its jaws on whole mouthfuls.
The summoning done, Amirah relaxes and her form shimmers as she returns to her more natural form, even as she steels herself to suffer another mental attack.

Re: [Hourglass of Zihaja D&D 4e] Heroes on a Sea of Swords IC
Iludai Cave Network
The spiders flow underneath Amirah's Tiger, biting and savaging the beast with their venomous mandibles as they skitter around to join the other swarm, though Amirah takes a swipe at them as they advance.
Meanwhile, the cockroach swarm affected by Rahman's Aegis slides its way in amongst the Hunters, nipping at the kobold that marked them.
Rahman summons a wall of fire with his blade, severely scorching the swarms near him, even as they instinctively assault him. The damage his strike inflicts to the cockroaches triggers the notes of Alvah's song, giving the diminutive swordmagus a buffer of defensive magic. Though he handily shoves the Wasps aside with his warding, the cockroaches score another hit on the alchemist. He wraps his Aegis about the two wasp swarms and shifts away from them, hoping to offer Jalil some protection.
Crunch:
SpoilerTiger takes 22 damage and OG10 PSN, Amirah gets an AoO against the offending spider swarm. The cockroach swarm can shift 3 squares as a move action, putting it in a position to attack Rahman for 11 damage + OG5 ACIDforgot Psychic Lock, that's a miss. Rahman does however take a further 8 damage from the cockroaches (plus 5 from ongoing) on his own turn, which bloodies him (surge lost to Energy Conservation). He shifts back and throws his Aegis on the two Wasp swarms after Flamewall Striking the two swarms next to him for 15 auto fire damage. He gets the 11 THP from Alvah this round for bloodying the cockroaches.
The Scarabs move and flank + attack Amirah. They miss.
Oh, and Medinah's Aegis triggers, if she feels like attacking the Spider swarm up at the top of the map.
I put Kihtsah in M12 because the square Dekkah picked is on a stalagmite and I don't think Kihtsah's Acrobatics will be good enough to stand up there reliably.
It is Jalil's turn. She is immediately attacked by the two wasp swarms and the cockroach swarm, and takes 10 damage from her various ongoing pains. Both wasps hit, but one of the hits is negated by Rahman's Aegis of Shielding. The cockroaches miss. The remaining wasp only deals 10 damage. This bloodies her; she may now proceed with her turn.
I performed this update in a somewhat staggered manner, due to my lack of internet most of yesterday. If there's any mistakes, please bear with me and don't hesitate to correct them. I am happy to do another map update if anything is out of place.
Battle Map
The pink shaded area is a dense cloud of insects.
