Tangent: friendship = magic. Maybe Twilight Sparkle is getting Steiger because of this? It would explain her teleport now, but not when freaked out powers for one. It has some pretty interesting ramifications if you assume it is true and then view the series through that lens.

I'm actually thinking Applejack would make a pretty good Wes. Not quite as shy as he was, but his was also a pointed, determined shyness, plus she can handle herself in a fight, and it's not out of character for her to take a more passive role when necessary.
