Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
Or, she just moves the sun because frankly she's given us no reason to doubt her. I mean, THEY MAKE CLOUDS IN FACTORIES. THEY HAVE TO MAKE SPRING HAPPEN MANUALLY. THE LEAVES DON'T FALL FROM THE TREES WITHOUT OUTSIDE PONY SUPPORT.
From some of the cosmology we've seen, the sun is probably a sphere that moves about the upper atmosphere (see Rarity's Icarus moment), so it's not like she's moving something with the mass of the real life sun. Also, if the sun is an atmospheric entity, the friction would gradually slow it down, requiring steady application of outside energy to keep it going.
But sure, go ahead and keep up your conspiracy theories. They keep you amused.
Actually, a friend of mine proposed the opposite. She has guards because when she uses her powers offensively, WATCH OUT. Her offensive magic is too strong for her to use it without risk of serious injury to whoever she's defending herself against, hence the guards.Last edited by darthbobcat; 2011-05-17 at 11:51 AM.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
Good air goes in... bad air goes out... good air goes in... bad air goes out...
sigh. Frankly, she's one of my favorite characters, (if only because I've never heard a voice actress pull off that level of motherly warmth in a cartoon before), so the constant "she's a troll tyrant fraud" talk does truly get on my nerves.
For instance, I could actually see her doing this. http://bobcat2011.deviantart.com/#/d3gfxjz and that is awesome.Last edited by darthbobcat; 2011-05-17 at 11:54 AM.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
Bobcat, that was amazing. I thought Celestia was badass in the Samurai Jack crossover but... wow, just wow. By the end of that I actually felt bad for Blueblood. This is a perfect example of my favorite depiction of Celestia, a supremely powerful God-Princess who does everything she does because she dearly loves her subjects. God help you if you hurt the ones she loves, oh wait, God can't help you because she's to busy laying her vengeance upon you.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
I'm right with you, man, she's one of my favorite characters too, and I think the worst that she can possibly be accused of is occasionally pulling some minor pranks to keep try to break all the polite trepidation and nervousness ponies have for her.
She's basically the cool mom that all ponies everywhere get.
(And that fic was great.)

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
She's definitely a great character. But setting aside the whole "troll tyrant fraud" thing, at least some ponies have gotten it into their heads that she'll go and banish them at the drop of a hat. Have the guards pretend to calm her down once in a while and people will be much less worried if they make a mistake around her while the guards are there. (Though I guess technically stealing her pet is a little more than a 'drop of a hat', but I doubt she'd ever REALLY banish someone unless it was the only option she had)

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
It is indeed awesome. I too am a fan of kind, non-banishy Celestia (although I do get the occasional kick out of her trolling...)
Also, I appreciate your promised review Bobcat, and look forward to it. In fact, if anypony doesn't care about spoilers and wants to help me bounce ideas around about how to pull off a MLP crime mystery, I'd more than welcome their communication.
Finally, some good news about final grades has me all but jumping around in circles (although I am going Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes... inside my head)This Machine Surrounds Hate And Forces It To Surrender

I wish I understood that Phantom of the Gala thing. The only thing I know about that play is "music of the night."

And now for some related humor and some unrelated adorable. I probably already posted one of these already, BUT IT BEARS REPEATING.

Edit: Y'know, if Blueblood did take it to heart, combined with my idea that he is forced to work on Sweet Apple Acres for a month (on pain of losing his state stipend), I could so see him falling for Applejack in the sort of "good girl fixes a fallen man" trope... and her just finding him annoying and useless throughout.Last edited by darthbobcat; 2011-05-17 at 02:15 PM.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
*sigh* Here we go again. Sorry, guys, but you seem to consider her being nice main reason that her alignment is LG-like; But, need I remind you, so was Tarquin. Celestia is a princess; She literally had niceness hammered into her as a part of her upbringing. That has nothing to do with her alignment.
If you look at her not by her behaviour, but by the content of her rule, the only way to explain how her country looks like is to assume she is bored, indifferent ruler that had done it all and now basically trolls ponies out of boredom (Trollestia) or a tyrant who doesn't care for anything but her rule and keeps pretences to be nice out of habit (Iron Hoof). Just look at the whole Phoenix episode, what the ponies thought punishment will be, and the look on her face when she approaches Fluttershy with burned phoenix (almost saying 'Off with her head!').
I'll state just one reason why I find Good Celestia to be extremely implausible - because of Twilight's/FS's/Rainbow's fear of being banished. This means either banishment penalty is in the law books, or that Celestia disregards the law and does as she sees fit (further supported by her not punishing main six for the Gala). Had she been a good ruler, there would be no disregard, or no banishment penalty. But then again, we're talking about someone who is willing to put family members through millennium long prison in the most inhospitable place possible, no?
Oh, and Aorts, we had dozens of alternate theories for most ponies you mentioned, IIRC
...
You know what, the only thing that worries me in this fandom is the river of bile and hate being spewed on Blueblood right now - all you need to do is to be rude toward a pony you met first time in your life, a typical gold digger he probably meets in dozens each week, and a cacophony of howls for blood raises pretty much instantly... Just because the guy doesn't like apples? Really? And you try to say innocent Trollestia theory bothers you more? I really don't know how to comment this

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
I think the difference is just that the show PRESENTS Celestia as nice, and Blueblood as a jerk.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
Taking the clothes off someone you barely know and throwing them in a puddle is pretty awful no matter how you slice it, Irbis. And he didn't even have the excuse of being up to zany antics at the time.
I vote we stop the Celestia debate here. It comes up too much, and nobody ever ends up convinced of anything, save what they've been convincing themselves of.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
Primary evidence, ie the show, presents that Princess Celestia is an overall good, kind and just ruler and that Blueblood is a complete jerk who can barely function as a pony, let alone a royal.
And considering that Rainbow Dash was in the midst of an emotional breakdown, and Twilight gets irrationally nervous whenever Princess Celestia comes to visit, as if getting a visit from her mom whom she desperately wants to impress and show that she's capable on her own, their opinions at the time at whatever punishment they would get were suspect at best.
Yes, there probably are punishments in place in the law book, same reason there are guards and stuff. But considering some of the stuff that ponies get away with without getting punished (Hey, Snips, Snails, way to go with that luring a terrible beast from the Everfree forest to trash almost the entire town!), actual punishments are rare and only for the harshest of cases, which in turn is rare in and of itself.
I'm also of the personal opinion that Celestia is playing SimEarth while everyone else is playing SimCity-she has incredible powers, but if she starts throwing it around without careful thought and planning, it can have devastating unforeseen effects. Thus, it's best to designate the smaller tasks to ponies who can handle them without accidentally creating a desert by mistake when you're just trying to stop a flood.Last edited by EsperDerek; 2011-05-17 at 02:48 PM.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
Also for that matter, the show is written with rule-of-funny over design-of-a-coheren-government-structure (as it should be, it is a children's show after all). What fun would Fluttershy's or Twilight's freakouts be if they were thinking rationally? (In fact, the humour comes from the ponies paniced over-reactions.)
I wouldn't rake J K Rowling over the coals for the fairly terrible ecomonic structre of Wizarding Britain in Harry Potter (as she said by her own admission she's fairly rubbish at that sort of thing; and hell even ROLEMASTER didn't get a decent economy going), nor the writers of superhero comics for driving tanks down the middle of the road to fight the protagonists (even though that does sometimes make me want to chew my own arm off).
But that's really neither here nor there.
I don't think anyone is objecting the the existence of Trollestia/Ironhoof (and even if they were, the "Belkar/Tarquin/etc isn't Evil" threads are proof that some people will believe what they want in spite of directly contradictory evidence!); merely that having it beaten into our skulls every five minutes is getting a bit wearying.

I prefer Trollestia, only sometimes I strife into iron hoof territory. And it's just funny because canon Celestia is a nice and motherly pony. Who occasionally likes to play pranks.

I like that picture. It always interests me when a member of the cast, as a human, is portrayed as something other that white. Like, in this case, it's the opposite of the normal expectation (light = white, dark = black). So they get points for good artwork and creativity in the presentation.

Re: My Little Pony VII: The Grand Galloping Thread
This. I vote we spoiler spoilers into 20 more spoilers, so that spoiler don't offend people about spoilered spoilers.
But then, what to do about people offended about spoiler boxes...? :P
Well... Maybe it was reaction to all these 'Twilight is dark' pictures? For some reason, she is the only one of the main cast consistently drawn with either heavily tanned/Indian skin.

Also Rainbow Dash is drawn tan on occasion. Don't know if that means she just spends a lot of time outside, or if she's Latina.
