Well, to be honest with you I did warn you of this when I was praising the final chapter. Everything had already come to a head, climaxed, and exploded violently in a satisfying burst of colors, shapes, and sounds. I don't know what the hay you could have possibly done for an encore, and it was my opinion at the time you could have called the whole thing right there. The only thing stopping you is/was the need to wrap up the metaplot, but to be perfectly frank I think it's brilliant with the hanging threads. It's your decision to make; I'm not always right. If you feel the payoff is strong enough then you should run with it.

Although I do kind of feel like (and this is going to sound really stupid given the particular subject matter) something should have come of my presence in the story. And I don't mean that Shimmer needs to be an important part of the narrative, she's just some putz who can't seem to untangle herself (sounds about right. <.<). It's just that the first invocation comes as a very funny visual gag, the second carries a punchline, the third is an apt comparison to the visual in the current scene, but by the fourth... the reader is going to wonder what you're planning with her, since she keeps sticking her nose in the narrative. And since there's ultimately no payoff to the final appearance, it's going to read as somewhat frustrating to anypony who doesn't get the joke. That's a moment where you need to consider letting her chew through the ball gag, glare and Braeburn and go, "You gigantic jerk!" before hopping away in a huff, leading to a bunch of confused looks and at least one pony asking, "Just who was that, anyway?" You wouldn't need to carry the scene much farther past that I don't think, but since you're there tying up (ha!) loose ends, I don't think introducing a new one is a very good idea. Minor though it be. You could also just cut her out of the scene; that would work just as well.

In the end there are some really nice shippy visuals in the epilogue, and I like it - it just doesn't stand up to the actual ending.
