Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
In 1994 I joined the Navy. Before I went to bootcamp, my mom took me out to dinner and a movie. The movie we saw was......
In the Army Now.
Bones Conway (Pauly Shore) & Jack Kaufman (Andy Dick) are two slackers who dream of opening their own stereo store. If only they could get enough money together to do it.
Enter the Army, Reserves. With a sign-up bonus of $2,500 each, they'll have $6,000 (Bones' math, not mine) to put toward opening their shop. And they have the perfect job, Water Purification Specialist! They certainly won't be seeing action with that job, right? Right?
I know there are Pauly Shore haters out there, but I genuinely loved this movie.
So anyway, the question I give to you, Cassie, is: At the beginning of the movie Bones is playing a video game, for which I have no idea what it is. But what is the video game system is he playing it on?

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
Willow! The 1988 movie about a Nelwyn farmer/sorcerer's apprentice hopeful, Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis), who's family finds a Daikini baby floating down the river.
And so the adventure begins. The baby, Elora Danan (Ruth & Kate Greenfield) is destined to bring about the downfall of the ruthless tyrant Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh). But first Willow must deliver her to Tir Asleen, where a great army will care for and protect her.
In the course of events, Willow finds Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), the greatest swordsman ever!; a couple ofcomediansbrownies, Rool (Kevin Pollack) and Franjean (Rick Overton); and a muskrat Sorceress Fin Raziel (Patricia Hayes).
At one point during the movie, Kael (Pat Roach) and Sorsha (Joanne Whalley), the Queen's generals, the second her daughter, have captured our heroes. But *musical entrance here* the brownies arrive to save the day!
Madmartigan steals their spears and tries to pick the lock on the cage. Not liking someone handling his spear, Franjean baps his nose with a bag of magical dust. Penguinator, what is the dust called, and what does it do?

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
Well, gosh. I watched this movie... once... ten (twelve? fifteen?) years ago... and I don't remember any such scene being in the movie at all. Hmmph.
What do I remember? It seems like there might have been some confusion as to Madmartigan's loyalties somewhere along the line. And maybe Sorsha's, too, maybe at another point during the film. Going by that, it seems like I ought to agree, which is why I will Disagree._______________________________________________

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
In 1996, Disney put to the silver screen Oliver & Company, a cartoon based on the book Oliver Twist.
Never read Oliver Twist? Neither have I. But the story of the movie is about an abandoned kitten in New York who finds himself cooperating in a sausage theft with top cool dog, Dodger (Billy Joel).
Dodger leads the kitten to the rest of his gang: Einstein (Richard Mulligan), Francis (Roscoe Lee Browne), Rita (Sheryl Lee Ralph), and Tito (Cheech Marin).
During a heist, the kitten finds himself adopted by a lonely little rich girl, Jenny (Natalie Gregory), who names the kitten Oliver (Joey Lawrence). And so a rescue is alunched to save the previously unnamed kitten from the torture sure to be put to him.
It is during this rescue that we meet Georgette (Bette Midler), a pure bred poodle who has been the families bread and butter. When confronted by the ruffians, she lets them know exactly who she is. A winner of Fifty Six Blue Ribbons, Fourteen Regional Trophies, and Six Time National Champion.
Mangostsa, as the view pans over the various trophies and awards this pampered pooch has accumulated, you see a magazine cover with her on it. What is the name of the magazine?

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
Does anyone actually read Dickens? I'm pretty sure I learned more about him from Monty Python's Bookshop sketch than any other source.
Anyway, I was clever enough to arrange for a younger sister to be born in such a timeframe that she would be Disney's target audience in the 90s. I also managed to engineer her with an obsession for cats because I'm just that awesome. Unfortunately, I didn't plan my own birth to precede hers by a wide enough margin to escape said horrors.
Many of you know that Oliver & Company, like Seinfeld, is set in NYC (rather than some pit in England, as I presume the original source material was), so you may expect the magazine in question to be The New Yorker, that also being the sort of publication that panders to those filthy dog-fanciers and commonly features "human interest" stories about pets. However, it is in fact Time Magazine which appears in the movie.

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
L is for Ladybugs, the 1992 movie about a salesman, Chester Lee (Rodney Dangerfield) trying to get a pay raise, and winding up as head coach for a girl's soccer team. Taking his PA, Julie (Jackée), along as his assistant coach.
The problem arises when they find out their is only one girl left from the championship dynasty from the years before, Nancy Larimer (LaCrystal Cooke). What is a coach who knows nothing about soccer to do?
Why, enlist the son of you betrothed, Bess (Ilene Graff), to dress as a girl and join the team. Enter Matthew (Jonathan Brandis), er, I mean Martha (still Jonathan Brandis).
As any typical teenage boy, Jonathan has a few things to learn about being a girl. For one, to stop starring at the bosses' daughter, Kimberly (Vinessa Shaw). But mostly how to act like a girl, and not tell the opposing coach "Up yours!".
But back to the dynasty of the previous Ladybugs. They almost ruled the girl's soccer championship from 1983 to 1990, missing only one year. Grue Bait, which year did they not win it?

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
Being somewhat of a Rodney Dangerfield fan, I've actually heard of this one. The one loss should be somewhere in the middle, so 1985 is it, I believe.

Re: Playground Squares XI: And here we go again!
Overthinking based on insufficient information, go!
Grue Bait hasn't given me much to work from, here. But "heard of it" rather implies "hasn't seen it," to my mind at least. That could be A Sign. Also, 1985 is not really "in the middle" of 1983 and 1990 - it's distinctly before the midpoint, and proportionately even more so if you exclude the endpoints (because otherwise the team's period of dominance would be described as 83-89 or 84-90). This, too, could be A Sign.
Ah, but a sign of what? Possibility One: Grue Bait's answer is incorrect, and these Signs are deliberate (or unconscious?) clues that I should not trust it, in which case I should Disagree. Possibility Two: Grue Bait's answer is correct, and these Signs are an elaborate double-bluff to make me think I should disagree, in which case I should Agree. (Of course, I don't know anyone who would do a thing like that... *whistles innocently*) One thing is true in either case, though: Grue Bait wants me to Disagree. And so I shall, because I'm just a really, really agreeable guy. It has nothing to do with the odds being 5:1 against. *whistles innocently*_______________________________________________
