Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
Rule one of all eldritch abominations is that, somewhere along the line, someone somewhere has to decide to make a doomsday cult about it, like half the cthulu works out there.
Granted, I've never seen WHY any of those cults would ever take off the ground, but its almost a required cliche to have them in any RPG with an eldritch abomination in it. Logic may dictate them not to exist, but Literary logic would, and literary rules always trump logic!Monk sucks, but you know, it's not actually worth negative LA.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
I imagine those cults would've been wiped out by Soon's paladins during the purge

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
The Holey Brotherhood was there. But after they were all sealed and made secret they didn't have much of an opportunity to be made into a cult phenomenon before Xykon took over the Sapphire Rift. Who knows, maybe the other, unsealed rifts now have cults surrounding them, but we don't know since we've never gone back to check, have we?

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
I'm guessing the Snarl isn't a widely-known thing.
The Holey Brotherhood only wanted to protect the holes. They had no idea of what was in the rifts or what it could do.>>softly open our mouths in the cold

Considering no one actually KNOWS about the Snarl, it would be pretty tough to make a cult about it!

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
There aren't very many people who know about it, so no significant cults exist.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
Or, the cults are just so secret they didn't pop up on the comic yet!
It could always be retconned that way if desired, seeing we can't see what is happening in the unsealed rifts/rifts yet not found.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
A) there's no need to retcon, as Rich has had the major story planned out since the Dungeon. He isn't just making this up as he goes along, so nothing needs to be retconned to fit in.
B) Also, in Strip 277, during the Crayons of Time flashback, we're told that the Sapphire Guard destroyed anyone who posed a threat to the gates and purged all mention of them from libraries. There very well may have been a cult, but it would have been destroyed.
C) SOD Spoilers:SpoilerRedcloak's tribe, for instance, is one such cult purged, although they didn't worship the Snarl itself, they were trying to use it.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
The Snarl is literally a STATE SECRET. Shojo was breaking the law simply by telling the Order about it. It's hardly widely-known, as the gods themselves concealed it's existence. Because of all this, no, there are no sults.

How do we know one of the nine sides we haven't met yet isn't a Snarl cult? I don't think so, but you never know.

Re: Suprised there aren\'t any snarl cults.
Not according to him.
While the individual gags in a given strip, or the total strips to get from X to Y isn't pre-deturmined (though he has an idea on that second part) the overall plot is set and has been since around strip 30.
Remember, Miko's entire character arc was planned, from introduction, inn romance that failed (though -why- it failed shifted), trial, Xykon confrontation, fall, and gem shattering, before the character was ever featured in a strip.Official Incense Aroma Specialist for the Vaarsuvius Fan Club!

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
In any case, I don't think introducing a snarl cult would count as retcon. Revealing that the whole sapphire guard was a snarl guild all along somehow would be a retcon.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
There have been hundreds of snarl worshiping cults. Theres a new one every week. Then the snarl eats them all and so no-one remembers them. :D

I was waiting in line at the teleportation circle and a whole gaggle of snarl cultists in their robes came over and tried to get me to buy their magazines and flowers.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
Cults ALWAYS exist, especially if the Authorities try to prevent them, or hunt down the Cultists. There's always One Person who grabs the backup copy of the Book of Deepest and Darkest Secrets and Other Humorous Anecdotes and skips out just ahead of the Good Guys.
Then that person starts the new cult all over again, seeking out the mentally unbalanced to form the backbone.
In the Crayon of Time strips, you can see "something" beyond the hole. So you know there has to be a cult dedicated to worshipping that "something," somewhere! Thanks to Ceika (X2), Yeril, Holammer and Dr. Bath for the Avatars!

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
This.
Also, why are so many people so readily dismissive of this thread? By and large this particular forum's primary use seems to be speculation - and it's not like this topic comes up a lot. I think it's an excellent question. Even though The Snarl is a state secret doesn't mean information has never been sold or stolen. It wouldn't take some deus ex machina for a Snarl-worshiping cult to exist. It's actually a pretty realistic possibility.El Rinquist, El Soltero Perpetuo

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
Why is everyone talking about the Snarl being a state secret? It's only a state secret where the Sapphire Guard held sway. Since the Sapphire Guard never controlled the entire world, there's still plenty of opportunity for knowledge of the Snarl to have spread throughout the populace enough to form a new cult.

Re: Suprised there aren't any snarl cults.
The Sapphire Guard claimed jurisdiction of the entire world though, and it is well documented that they ventured into all parts of it to destroy those who threatened the date and purged histories of it... so since we have never seen anyone outside of RC / SG knowing about the gates, it is the default assumption that the SG was successful covering them up.
