Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
The party carries out Rennard's plan. Outside Racker's alley, a small, morbidly-curious crowd has gathered, peering into the grimy alleyway at the diseased corpses. Most come to their senses quickly, however, and depart for their houses, rags covering their noses and mouths to ward away plague.
The major thoroughfares of the city are unusually empty all the way to the Citadel. There, grim-faced patrol leaders pass out black scarves with which the guardsmen and -women cover their faces.
A blonde, bearded captain spots Rennard and Aldrin. "Looking for the Field Marshal, gentlemen?" he asks. "She's in Castle Korvosa at present; the Queen has called all the highest officials there. Praise Abadar if they find some way to stop this."
Reporting the situation in Racker's Alley earns you a glum nod. "I'll gather together some men and supplies. We can't let this get out of hand."
-------------------------------------
The pile of bodies ignites slowly, the smell of putrid, burning flesh seeping into the air. Around the corpses, city guards prod at the pile with long poles, their ends wrapped in tar-soaked linens and set aflame. It takes nearly half an hour, but the pile becomes a bonfire, plumes of black smoke curling in noxious waves into the air. Leaving Racker's Alley behind you, you step out into the city. Racker's Alley, it seems, was far from unique: across the skyline, columns of inky smoke rise up like a sickly black forest sprouting atop the roofs.
-------------------------------------
Returning to the Citadel, something is clearly in progress. The echoes of forcefully spoken but still just-missed words resound off the imposing granite and iron walls of Citadel Volshyenek’s outer curtain. Dozens of red-and silver-armored guards stand in assembly upon the pitted stone mustering ground here, mumbling in hushed, somber tones. Before them, atop a weathered wooden platform, paces Field Marshal Kroft, who has returned from the Castle, her eyebrows arched sternly as she momentarily tolerates the crowd’s murmurs. Behind her upon the scaffold stand three grizzled veteran guardsmen at attention, as well as a strange-looking group. These men wear cowled robes of oily-looking leather, supple gloves, and wide black hats. Some grip heavy canes, others dark satchels. Each of them, though, wears a dark-goggled mask tapering to a pointed beak. Among them stand two others. The first is a middleaged gentleman in a simple black overcoat with streaks of white gracing the sides of his short dark hair. He watches the gathered guards with a soft, concerned expression, his hands tightly clasping a heavy-looking doctor’s case. The second figure is an imposing one indeed - a woman dressed in grey full-plate armor, a longsword and shield at her side, and her blank-faced full helm sporting a bright red plume.
The Field Marshal's tone cuts through the rumble of whispers. "Sergeant, the decree, please." One of her aides steps forwards to hand her a rolled piece of vellum. Unfurling it, Kroft begins to read. "By the decree of Her Majesty, Queen Ileosa Arabasti, all citizens are required by law to aid and admit the newly established Queen's Physicians in this time of urgency. These royal agents will extend healing to the sick and organize defence against the spreading affliction knwon as 'blood veil.' They are to be allowed access to any home or building they deem necessary in the course of their duties. All those suffering from disease or disorder are to submit themselves to the Physicians for treatment."
"To aid in the duties of the Queen's Physicians, Her Majesty hereby resolves to increase the strength of Her bodyguard and dedicate them to augment and strengthen the peace where city guards will not suffice."
"Impeding or distracting the duties of the Queen's Physicians or the Royal Bodyguard is punishable by imprisonment. Impersonating one of the Queen's Physicians is punishable by death. Knowingly harboring or hiding the infected is punishable by death. Purposefully spreading blood veil is punishable by torture, then death."
"The Queen's Physicians will be making rounds of every city district henceforth until Her Majesty deems this crisis abated."
Kroft re-rolls the scroll, handing it back to her aide. She clasps her hands behind her back, pacing on her platform. "You will escort Doctor Davaulus and his men in their royal duties wherever those might take them. You are to consider any order given by a member of the Royal Bodyguard to be as binding as any given by a superior officer. You will not balk. These are dire times and your city needs you. Your patrol leaders have your assignments. Dismissed!"Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

"Well..." comments Aldrin, taking in all the new information from the Field Marshal, "It looks like they're starting to get this under control. I've heard worse excuses to drink, anyway. Maybe we should speak with Kroft when she has a moment; I'm curious what her thoughts are on the Seneschal."

Jensi
Jensi doesn't seem to pay much mind to Kroft's speech, nor to his companions' ideas of speaking to the Field Marshall. Instead, the youth toddles off to the friendly-looking man with the doctor's case.
"Hi!" Jensi says brightly. "Are you a doctor? I hope you are, because the city definitely needs some people to help out. I try to help out whenever I can, even though I'm not a doctor. I've got some magic that can sometimes cure people, but I bet you and your doctors will be super great at curing people with medicine! Did you know the priests of Abadar won't help? That's not very nice, is it? Oh, and what are those masks for? They look kind of silly to me, since they look like birds. But not even very pretty birds! If I had to wear a bird mask it would be of something pretty." Finally the oracle takes a breath and allows the man to respond.LGBTitP

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
As the guards disperse, Kroft spots the party and walks over, nodding by way of greeting. "I see you had to bear witness to that little piece of oratory," the Field Marshal says, her voice slightly sheepish. "I'm a soldier, not a bard, as I'm sure you can tell now." Fortunately, the new business at hand seems to have put Vencarlo's mysterious request that she passed on to you out of her head.
"I take it that, if you're here, you know what we're up against? The plague is being called 'blood veil,' and it's killed by my estimates as many as three hundred people. There's no telling how many more are infected, but we know it's overwhelmed the capacities of all the temples in the city already. Dr. Davaulus says that it will take at least a week to develop a cure, and that's the optimistic estimate. All we can do is try to minimize it."
Meanwhile, Jensi heads over to speak with the doctor, who smiles slightly through thin lips in a good-natured way at Jensi's numerous questions. "Yes," he says in a soft voice, "I am Doctor Davaulus. I have been asked to stop this plague as best I can, but I think that in the end we will succeed because of good hearts such as yours, lad."
He continues. "I do understand that the Abadarians have been reluctant to break with their customary ways. It is unfortunate, but it is my great hope that they will soon be convinced to do so, whether by sweet words or the realities of our situation."
Then he chuckles in response to Jensi's final question. "Yes, indeed, these masks are not colourful, nor beautiful. They could be called silly, yes, but they are also vital. The nosepiece, you see, is filled with aromatics, and layered to keep out the disease. It allows us to do our work." The doctor looks down to Jensi's holy symbol. "A follower of Shelyn might not understand, but function must come before beauty, unfortunate as this may be."Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Dastan quickly salutes the Field Marshal, a habit he seems to have gotten into despite not technically being part of her command at all, then shrugs. "Your proclamation served its purpose, I should think, Field Marshal. Sometimes a simple statement is more valuable than flowery words, and in a situation as chaotic as this plague I am glad to see that the situation is being given the respect it deserves." He removes one of his gauntlets and idly lifts his hand to scratch at his neck. "I was slightly concerned by one of the decrees, however. The Queen is expanding her bodyguard to assist the city watch? Would it not be more efficient to simply expand the watch instead? The duties of a bodyguard and those of a peacekeeper overlap but rarely..." He trails off, clearly uncomfortable with this line of reasoning. "I am, as always, ready to assist you in safeguarding the city, Field Marshal."

Aldrin frowns as Dastan mentions the expansion of the Queen's bodyguard. "That's a good point, Dastan. Cresida, I'm curious, do you have any authority over the Queen's Physicians or the Royal Bodyguard? After all you've done for the city during the riots, it seems like a slap in the face to start giving power to some other group. And the power to enter any home they wish sounds... abusable."

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Cressida chooses her words carefully, and seems slightly uneasy. "It's true, Dastan; I'm not sure how I feel about that particular decree... It makes sense, in some ways. Experienced warriors and mercenaries can be hired as bodyguards who wouldn't think of accepting the salaries we pay our guardsmen, and we may just need their services. And there's been little love for the Queen, so perhaps a bodyguard is justified for that reason alone." She smiles a nervous grin and chuckles. "And, speaking as a woman, I can't say I object - there are some damned good swordswomen in the world, and the Queen wants her guard to be all female. But, still... It makes me nervous. There's a lot of tradition in Korvosa, and this has never been done before."
"As for my command, Aldrin, I won't have any formal authority, but Doctor Davaulus has been very agreeable so far. He's deferred to me on virtually everything save his medical expertise. So if this is intended as a slap in my face, it hasn't succeeded yet. Besides, I serve Korvosa at the pleasure of the sovereign. I do my duty and try not to think about anything beyond that." There is a hint of pride in her voice.
"Yes," she continues; "the Physicians will be able to enter any house... but you've seen what this plague does to people. I can't deny that it might just be necessary. And they'll be entering to help people, not harass them."Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
All female guard echoes Reve with a tone that seems to mirrors Kroft's pride and worry Do you think they would let me join, Bonded? continues the blade in an effort to maintain her usual jocosity
Bonded?
Rennard does not respond. In fact, the magus had not been paying attention to any of his companions since agreeing with Aldrin that the party should talk with the Field Marshall.
The duelist was dedicating his considerable mental faculties solely to remembering Zellara's harrowing
Two cards spoke of what had already happened: The King's assasination Rennard thinks to himself, ordering his thoughts
"This," Zellara says, "is the liar. It is obsession, doomed love, and treachery. The King is dead, by treachery, and, to hear the tales, it was either by a doomed, fatal love, or the treachery of his painter! Perhaps the care speaks of him."the Empty Throne signifies knowledge from the ancient dead - that'd be me."
Now, what has happened since: The Blood Veil Plague. Three cards could be adjudicated to the disease proceeds the methodical duelist
"The Forge is a trial. The weak perish, and the strong triumph. I see a great danger for all ahead; if it is the trial, well, the strong will need to be very strong indeed!"" The Joke: there lies ahead a challenge for which physical prowess will not solve nor defend against.""The Fiend is nothing to laugh at, I'm afraid. A great calamity comes, bringing death and destruction in its wake."
The Crows: "Even as we speak," Zellara intones, "I sense that something precious has been found; soon something else will be stolen away as a result."
At this point, Rennard is left with what he knows to be the most important pieces of the puzzle: The three cards that might still offer an insight on the future and the minimization of the calamity striking the city
"The Queen represents the hive - city. The Queen knows much that is hidden. Her knowledge may be the life or death of the hive. Who the Queen is, however, I could not begin to guess!""the Publican offers sanctuary and refuge. Let us hope, then, that he is not such a good publican as to charge for his service.""the Winged Serpent may provide guidance. With proper wisdom and knowledge, you will know where and when to strike. You must do so before it is too late!"
Could there be someone or somewhere here in the city that may hold the cure for the plague? Is the Publican related to the hiding place of the Red Mantis assassin?
SpoilerLater in the day, Rennard will share his hypotheses on the meaning of the cards
The fencer sighs in frustration.
I need more data
Turning away from Aldrin, Dastan and Kroft, Rennard traces the opposite path to Jensy, quickly weaving his way to where the doctor is before he has a chance to leave
Doctor the magus says without really taking the time to introduce himself had there been any diseases like the blood veil in the history of the city? Is there anything that can be done to help with the research for a cure? Though it still could not be called empathetic, the duelist's tone does convey a genuine interest to help.Last edited by Drothmal; 2012-03-16 at 05:28 PM.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Doctor Davaulus' brow wrinkles thoughtfully at Rennard's question. "I am afraid that I do not know. There have been plagues before, of course, but it is difficult to determine at so early a stage whether this one is similar. It has certainly proven deadly within a very short timespan, however. We have looked over casualty records for previous plagues, and this one has killed many more people in a single day than any before."
"If you would like to aid us, I think we could put you to better use than simple research..."
"If you wish to help, there is a matter of some... concern. We have received word that there is a businesswoman by the name of Vendra Loagri, who is claiming to have cured the plague. Since that surely is not possible so quickly, I would ask you to go to her store, Luxuriant Lavender, and investigate." The doctor looks skywards, where the sun is fast setting. "Perhaps tomorrow would be best, if you can spare the time."
Meanwhile, Kroft receives a missive from one of her aides. She reads it, a scowl fast forming on her face. "Filthy vermin," she growls. Then she looks up, her face dark, and begins to explain. "There's been wererat sighting by the docks. The beasts are bad enough normally, but they can't be allowed to roam free spreading pestilence now of all times. They'll be in the sewers. Normally we can send an occasional patrol in there, but wererats are hard to find at the best of times, and recently we've been too busy keeping the city-proper secure. I know you've all done quite a bit of killing on behalf of Korvosa already, but if you're willing to do some more, I'll see to it that you're well paid for it."Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

"Ah, I see... sounds fair, I suppose," Aldrin responds to the Field Marshall's explaination of the Queen's decrees. When she receives the missive and requests the group's aid, the sorcerer perks up and answers, "Sure thing. You keep the order on the streets, we'll keep it below them. Well, I will at any rate, but I have the feeling my companions are also game for more work."

Rennard nods silently at hearing this: Even though the information was so grim, the duelist was glad to have some data to use as point of reference
"If you wish to help, there is a matter of some... concern. We have received word that there is a businesswoman by the name of Vendra Loagri, who is claiming to have cured the plague. Dastan's eyes widen at the mention of the wererats and he blurts out, "Lycanthropes? Here, in the city. Merciful gods, with the Watch and the divine healers occupied by the plague, there's no telling how far they could spread their taint! We must eliminate them as soon as possible, before they can infect others with their curse, or even one true lycanthrope could infect dozens, not to mention the plagues and diseases the foul creatures tend to spread. I can assure you, I will do all in my power to eliminate the creatures."

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
The sun is fully setting by the time the party sets out, and Korvosa is bathed in vibrant crimson and orange hues. Here and there on the streets come the doctors, wandering like strange, masked apparitions from closed door to closed door, knocking upon them with long canes. Inevitably, the doors open cautiously, a suspicious head peering out. Hushed words are spoken and the doctors either enter or depart as quietly as the have come, moving noiselessly onwards as if they were strange black carrion birds come for the dead and dying. The streets themselves have become an eerie tableaux. Fear is palpable upon the air, and, besides the doctors, the cities guards walk in silence, as though mere words might somehow conjure up the disease. Occasionally, you see in some dark alley or deserted lane a female figure, concealed completely beneath grey plated armor, her visored helmet topped by a crimson plume.
The temple of Sarenrae comes into view as the last rays of the sun fade from the now-darkened sky. Inside it is lit only by hundreds of candles, casting over the temple's interior a shimmering golden haze of light. It is almost as if the priests and priestesses, the sick, dying, and dead who lie in lines across the floors, and the altars to the sun goddess, all lie under water.
Gliding out of the candlelit recesses comes Mother Dawnflower. Her robes are stained with blood and grime, and her eyes seem infinitely saddened. "Death stalks the land... So many have died," she says to no one in particular, her smooth coffee skin serene, though a constant line of tears runs down her cheeks. She seems to return to reality, her dark brown eyes focussing on you. "May I be of service? If you wish to offer aid, there is much that might be done."Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

Her brother is a servant in the Carowyn Manor. He was supposed to return home from a banquet his masters were hosting, but he has not. She fears something may have happened to him. She has gone to the manor, but there was no response to her knocking. The girl asks now for help, and I do not wish to turn her away, but we can spare no priests. The Dawnflower will smile on those who help the desperate; please, consider it." She gives a small, worried smile.

Bonded, we must help! pleads Reve. The blade had been growing more and more distressed upon seeing all the suffering across the city
It would be inefficient to use our time to save only one when so many are at risk. We must allocate our resources in the most effective way replies Rennard, placing logic over his own inclination to help
Don't be a hypocrite! replies the black rapier, furious at her master's cold reasonign You were only one, yet your father sacrificed himself for you and Vencarlo came to your aid when you most needed him!

Bonded... Reve says softly, realizing that she had reopened the wound that had only began to heal a few months ago after years of festering
Thankfully, Aldrin's words interrupt the silent argument
We may have able to allocate a few hours tonight to check the Manor. adds the fencer in a dispassionate tone that suggest more a lesson planning than lychantropes and plagues. But I agree with Aldrin, we have many pressing matters to attend to, so if the boy is not there, I doubt we'll have the time for an exhaustive search

The expansive manor house surrounded by meticulously-manicured gardens, elegantly arranged with hedges, gazebos, and fountains. The manor itself possesses a stately limestone facade festooned with cinderberry garlands and bright red drapes. Ostentatious mahogany double-doors stand, closed, under a balcony complete with polished brass railings. Off to one side of the manor, discretely concealed behind one of the larger fountains, is a small side entrance for the servants. Its door, also mahogany (though simpler), is closed. Behind the red drapes, you can see golden candlelight.Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

"Ruan. That's a nice name. Wait - I know a Ruan! He's not a very nice person, or at least he wasn't very nice to me. Maybe it's a different Ruan though, or maybe he's gotten nicer." Jensi pauses for a moment, thinking. "I don't suppose it matters that much, we should rescue him anyways."
The party approaches the mansion. Jensi gapes at the luxurious grounds. It's all so pretty! The youth suppresses a momentary desire to splash about in the fountains, instead keeping his mind focused on the task at hand.

Dastan nods in response to the high priestess' statement. "I shall return as soon as I am able." He then turns and follows his companions out of the temple.

Dastan glances around the ostantatious manor grounds, then remarks. "Well, this particular home doesn't appear to have been overly affected by the plague. Shall we announce ourselves and ask after the missing child?"Avatar by the wonderful SubLimePie. Former avatar by Andraste.

"What's the alternative? Infiltration? No, I say we deal with this in a straightforward manner as possible, and see what we can do about the kid. Then we can get back to, you know, saving the city."
He sighs, expecting the assignment to go sour somehow. "If they refuse, and you deem it necesary to incapacitate anyone, just let me know. It seems to be one of my specialties."
Motioning to the door he requests, "Shall you introduce us to the noble, then, Dastan?"Avatar by A Rainy Knight

Tallox scowls at the group's choice to waste time on such a trite endeavor. Atavian ignores the beyonder's moodiness, however, and adds, "that plan works for us."

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
The mahogany doors ring out loudly as they are struck. A minute passes in silence, then another. Cautiously, the doors are opened, and the mansion is entered.
Inside, Carowyn Manor is elegantly lit by an everburning chandelier, which hangs over the great entry hall, casting its light over the painting-adorned walls and the marble floor. A set of doors leads off of the hallway at the end opposite you. Suits of decorative armour stand like guards flanking these doors, though one, oddly, has been partly dismantled, and its pieces lie strewn around it. Something is terribly wrong, though, and the armour is the least of it. In the middle of the floor is the corpse of a woman, dressed extravagantly in a flowing purple gown. Her arms and face are covered in red blisters. By her hand is a shattered wine glass, its red contents dried and sticky on the floor beside her.Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
We should help her! cries Reve telepathically
No one should move in yet responds the fencer aloud in a rather cold voice We do not know what we might be facing and we should act accordingly.
Dastan, can you sense any evil presences? Aldrin and Atavian, scan for magic in the area. Jensi, stay behind Tallox
While he gives directions to his companions, Rennard looks at the structure of the room, focusing on the chandelier.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
Dastan is already three steps into the room by the time Rennard makes his statements, rushing to the slain woman. He slows to a halt at the fencer's suggestion and calls back, "Someone should check on the woman! I will scan the area, but there is some chance she yet lives, and if not then we had best learn what killed her." With that he calls upon his divine sight and begins sweeping the room, looking for anything that might suggest what happened here.

Activating Detect Evil, then making a quick sweep of the room. I'll use a Move action to focus on any sources of Evil that do pop up.

"I'll help," Jensi says, scurrying forwards. "Look at her face. She's got red dots all over it - do you think she's sick too?" the youth wonders aloud as he checks her pulse.
SpoilerI'm fairly sure she's dead, but here's a heal check to see. If she's alive Jensi will cast Cure Light Wounds on her.

Re: (Pathfinder) The Curse of the Crimson Throne IC
The young oracle approaches the woman's body. He quickly identifies the blisters covering her bodies as those caused by the plague afflicting Korvosa. However, a closer inspection of the corpse reveals that she has also been slashed in several places by sharp claws.
Dastan, meanwhile, inspects the room with Iomedae's divine magic. The gaudy hallway is bereft of the whiff of evil, its ornate statuary and marble floors perfectly unafflicted by any malignance. But beyond the set of doors that leads further into Carowyn Manor, a mass of vileness can be clearly felt, moving in all directions at once, and covering a large area.
