Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
In his studies of undead, Augustin once found a description of a creature called a poltergeist, which attacks by throwing objects or people around using a telekinesis power. A poltergeist is an angry spirit that forms from the soul of a creature that, for whatever reason, becomes unable to leave the site of its death. Sometimes, this might be due to an unfinished task—other times, it might be due to a powerful necromantic effect. A poltergeist is bound to a specific place, usually a building, room, or recognizable area. Poltergeists are difficult to fight, being incorporeal, as well as invisible most of the time, due to their very nature.

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Augustin pauses, straining to recall his long neglected studies. "Some spirits become bound to a place, unbodied, either from unfinished task or dark magic. They are given to throwing objects. If we could find out what it is the spirit left undone, we may be able to release it. Unless the whispering way bound it, in which case other measure may be required."

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Tamara tries to bat the flying knife away, ineffectually. Augustin and Morcaine's attempt at parlay stirs up a reaction, though.
A sepulchral voice rises up, cackling, "Here I am, mortals !"
In the center of the room, a twisted, nearly skeletal ghost of a broken prisoner becomes visible for a split second, its fiery red eyes watching the heroes with undiluted hatred. The terrifying sight strikes a chill in everybody's heart, before it again disappears from view.
SpoilerEverybody who sees this (ie. all but Briar and Kaythek who are delaying, still in the furnace room) needs to make a Will save DC14 against this fear effect, or become frightened for (1d4)[1] rounds.

The sight of this ghost, a rebellious prisoner who clearly could not be reasoned with, sharpened Morcaine's anger. She stands her ground and glares at the monster. As a Knight of Ozem, she would show now fear.

Hearing the ghost's proclamation, a smile breaks Kaythek's face as he lifts his falchion and launches himself towards the room his compatriots are in. I got something for you, spirit, he thinks, as he lets out a raging scream as he goes through the door, falchion in his right hand.

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Seeing the poltergeist reveal itself triggers an awful reminiscence in Ulric's mind.
We were beaten...Murdered one by one... Save for me. But not here, no, not AGAIN ! Sarenrae, help me !
The sight proves too much for him, and he turns away, fleeing from the room as if his legs went on their own volition.
"Nooo !", he screams, as he nearly bumps into Kaythek, coming in the other direction.DM in Mummy's Mask I, II, III | Keshkaru and Ozkrak in Extinction Curse | Marzena in Age of Worms | Elrembriel in Wrath of the Righteous | Gurmok in Nightmare in Katapesh | DM in Catacombs of Ravenloft Avatar courtesy of Neoseph7

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
As terror erupts around her, Tamara (happy to finally see her assailant) greets him, "Oh! Hi!!!" She smiles as her companions begin to sprint out of the room, "wait! Where are you guys going? Wait! Where did you go? Ghost, uh-person... we could help you find peace, it might be nicer that way!"
At Morcaine's call, Tamara grabs a haunt siphon and holds it for the changeling, "here you go!"

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Briar blinks in surprise as she stumbles into the room, behind the rest of the party, seeing all the confusion. Tamara is babbling about a ghost, and Ulric is screaming in a most un-paladin-like fear. "More spirits? Understand given nature of prison, but irksome that, apparently, every soul here decidedly lacking in powers of introspection, faith, peace of mind necessary to prevent undeath. Unless necromancers responsible. Whispering Way and all that."
Unable to do anything about the ghost, Briar simply holds her crossbow at the ready for if it should appear again, hostile.Fantastic avatar by Ceika.

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Sneering as Ulric ran, Kaythek let the paladin run, before taking a step forward, imposing himself in the doorway. Now I know why I am here.
"Are you not the chosen of Pharasma, Augustin," questions Kaythek, yelling the top of his lungs, "Are you not a follower of the Crusader, Morcaine? Or are you two cowards, disgracing yourselves before the gods and goddess like Ulric is doing?"
Taking a step forward, his eyes scanningfor the poltergiest, Kaythek address the group again. "Stand and fight, or flee and face the wrath of the divine!"

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
If Augustin heard Kaythek's words, it doesn't show. Terror in his eyes, he runs back to the furnace room after Ulric. Right behind him, the door starts to move on its own... and slams shut in a loud, startling bang !
In a shower of broken glass, a large bottle goes through the window pane of one of the medical chests and flies itself at Kaythek, while one of the flying knives darts straight towards Morcaine.

He swears loudly, the first time any of the others have ever heard him utter an unseemly word. Gathering his wits, he rushes back to the door and tries to force it open again, without any success. Another raging, rasped profanity comes through his clenched teeth.

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Images of his fathers estate overrun by dead creatures flood Augustin's mind as he cowers in the boiler room. I cannot...I cannot...I serve the Lady of Graves, no apparition can stand against me. Death bears no terror. I cannot leave the others in there.
He takes a deep breath, closing his eyes, and masters his fear before striding to the door and dropping his shield. "Ulric, if it will not open, then let us take it down. We must get back in there."

Re: JJJ's Haunting of Harrowstone
Briar assesses her options. Retreat: No, way back sealed off. Ulric on other side of door. Foolish thing to do, but not his fault. Attack: not practicable until enemy shows itself. Destroy all objects susceptible to telekinetic forces? Even less practicable than guessing at enemy's position. She sighs. Under the circumstances, the best thing she can think of is to ensure she's ready to fight. She unstoppers one of her flasks, drinking down a potion to mend some of her burns.

Spoiler"AAARRHHHH ! You will pay for this, mortal !" says the disembodied, raging voice.

Briar is practically pulling her hair out by now, jumping up and down while fuming angrily. "Damnation. Explosive solution to problem of haunting becoming increasingly preferable.
